As if it wasn't exciting enough for Grace (Samara Weaving) to have found the love of her life with Alex Le Domas (Mark O’Brien). The young woman from a modest background marries into a big board game empire. In order to see whether the bride also fits the family, Grace has to face a traditional ritual on the imposing family estate in the evening after the wedding ceremony: As a new member of Le Domas’, she must draw a card from a stack to determine which game to play with the new family. She draws the hide-and-seek card - the only card that could have drastic consequences for Grace. For she must now hide somewhere on the property and must not be found until sunrise. But if she is discovered anyway, the game ends with her death. For Grace it is clear: she can only survive such a game if she plays according to her own rules…

"Ready or not" by director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett is a very refreshing contribution to the horror genre. Not only that this is finally an original material and not a remake, a sequel or a reboot. Also, the fact that the two filmmakers have finally staged a nasty, bloody and really funny horror comedy again, makes for a positive surprise when watching it. Certainly, the wheel is not reinvented here. But the movie is just fun and at some points even has some really nice surprises to offer. That alone is enough to overlook a few weaker gags or familiar genre clichés.

The actors all play in a really good mood, with Samara Weaving as the bride fleeing from her in-laws being especially great. Just how perfectly she is cast in this role is made clear by the way she gives the last sentence of the film. Wonderful! But also a few very original (and not always intentional) deaths provide in their macabre way again and again for really good laughs. The only thing you could blame the film for in this respect is the fact that there are some longer sequences in which there is no trace of humor. Here, it almost seems as if the filmmakers couldn't really decide whether they wanted to deliver a solid horror or a bloody comedy. Edgar Wright, for example, has mastered this difficult balancing act much better with "Shaun of the Dead".

However: Even with some weaknesses, "Ready or not" is in the end a great pleasure for all those who like to have their horror food served not only bloody but also extremely amusing. A hide-and-seek game of a slightly different kind, which only barely misses its cult status. And for that there is more than deserved one: Absolutely worth seeing!
