In the not too distant future, mankind is groaning under wars, scarce resources and a crazy world climate. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) uses every opportunity he gets to escape the dreary reality and stay in the OASIS, a virtual world in which he can be whatever and look what he wants. This world, where users can let their imagination run wild, is the retreat for most people. The OASIS was created by the eccentric genius James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When the loner died, he ordered that his entire fortune and total control of the OASIS go to the one who manages to find an Easter Egg that Halliday has hidden deep in the OASIS. This is only possible if you master the tasks that lead you to the secret keys. Numerous hunters have been trying for years to find the Easter Egg, but are still biting their teeth at the first task. Wade also belongs to those players who have not yet given up hope for the great fortune. After countless attempts he succeeds one day in finding the first key. But he's also inciting an organization that wants to take control of OASIS at any price…

The novel "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline is considered an absolute cult novel, especially for lovers of pop culture of the 80s. And who would be better suited for a cinematic adaptation than the man who shaped this era like hardly any other. Steven Spielberg, whose work as a director and producer is of course not unmentioned in the book, faced a task that was not easy. He had to create two worlds that draw the audience into the story. On the one hand, the real world, which is supposed to appear futuristic, but is nevertheless anchored in our present and thus has a certain recognition value. On the other hand the virtual world, which must be imaginative, boundless and full of wonders, but still not too strange or overloaded.

Everything Spielberg did brilliantly. This is especially apparent in the fact that the viewer soon forgets that the avatars look very artificial after all. One is carried away by the richness of detail of the OASIS, which is not limited to the appearance of cult figures of pop culture - such as King Kong, Freddy Kruger, Hello Kitty and and and - alone. Even if the diversity and the size of the worlds of the OASIS, as described in the book, is not really conveyed, Spielberg manages very well to conjure up a virtual playground on which the eyes of the spectators can really let off steam. Granted, that's a bit too much at times and it takes a lot of watching of the movie to really recognize all the details. But Spielberg fortunately avoided the complete visual overkill by also taking time for many character moments in the real world that work no less well.

Good, also here the film takes some liberties compared to the book template. So the cinematic incarnation of Wade Watts looks much better than described by Cline. Also, unlike in the book, his avatar does not really resemble him. Of course, this does little to change the extremely high entertainment value of the film. Tempo, action, suspense, humour - almost always the right button is pressed. Particularly well done is the sequence in which the film is furthest away from the book: when the second key is obtained. While Wade and his friends had to go to the movie "War Games" in the novel, it is a completely different, rather creepy cult work in the movie. And the homage to this classic is great to say the least!

In view of the fact that, strictly speaking, the plot is rather poor and the film doesn't offer much more than a flashy videogame, "Ready Player One" has really become great cinema entertainment. With two completely different films, which were released in cinemas only a few months apart ("Die Verlegerin" started only a few weeks ago in Germany), Steven Spielberg once again underlines his status as one of the greatest and most important directors of modern entertainment cinema. If you just like your fantasy movies, love the pop culture of the 80s and also have nothing against a certain video game look, you shouldn't miss this successful bestseller movie. absolutely recommended!
