Surviving on the dark planet Corellia can only be done by stealing and cheating. The young Han (Alden Ehrenreich) is particularly good at it. But he also has a goal: he wants to bring himself and his girlfriend Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) from this planet to a better future. They almost succeed, but then they are separated. Han manages to leave Corellia, but from now on has only one goal: He wants to buy a ship to return and fetch Qi'ra. For this he joins a troop of smugglers around Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), who pursue a big coup, which would earn enough money to buy a ship with it. But when the plan fails, Han begins an adventurous journey through the galaxy, which brings him new allies, but also unexpected surprises and dangers…

Who knows my criticisms of the cinema may already know: I'm a big Star Wars fan. Yes, I was also a little disappointed by some aspects of "The Last Jedi" and I also belong to those for whom it is quite clear: there is no replacement for Harrison Ford. Nevertheless, I was looking forward to "Solo: A Star Wars Story" and was also open to Alden Ehrenreich from the beginning. Certainly, he would never be able to hold a candle to old Han, whom we got to know and love in Episode IV. But who knows - maybe he is good for a surprise after all. It is well known that the production has been afflicted by several complications. The fact that the two directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were replaced by Ron Howard shortly before the end of the shooting, who then shot most of the film anew, isn't a very good sign in itself. Nevertheless, I deliberately avoided joining the mass of fans who had copied the film and ripped it off in advance.

What shall I say - my hope for an entertaining cinema adventure has been fully fulfilled. Yes, the film plays it safe and is fan service from start to finish. This may not be very creative, but as a fan it always brings a big grin to your face. And the makers have succeeded in realizing some special stations - such as the first meeting between Han and Chewie - in a very special way. Well, perhaps Hans' legendary cubes are too often hung in the picture without any form of subtlety. And perhaps the way he comes to his "surname" solo is also a little badly constructed. But all in all Ron Howard and the screenwriters (and also the disgraced directors, whose work is still a little bit to be seen) do very well with the way to give the fans what they (allegedly) want.

However, the film also has its weak points. One of them is L3-37, a (pre-)loud robot lady who screams for equality and freedom for the robots. Here as well as towards the end the club of political correctness is swung too obtrusively, which - as already with the topic animal protection in "The Last Jedi" - simply seems too imposed and too obtrusive. In addition, L3-37, unlike C3-PO or K-2SO from "Rogue One", quickly gets on the nerves of the audience, which makes an emotional scene seem downright relieving and almost involuntarily funny.

On the other hand, the film's visuals really score points for it. It's clearly a "Star Wars" movie, but still has its own visual character. The effects are first class, although it's very nice to see that here too, in addition to a lot of CGI, numerous practical effects are used. There are a few scenes you want to freeze as a fan and hang on the wall as posters.

Now a few words about the actors. It takes a while, but at some point Alden Ehrenreich can convince as a young Han solo. He obviously tries to adopt the facial expressions and mannerisms of Harrison Ford, which he does very well in a few moments. Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian is the ideal cast. There's really nothing wrong with that. The Finn Joonas Suotamo is also a convincing new Chewbacca. The new characters are embodied by Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones"), Paul Bettany and Woody Harrelson, whereby Clarke leaves the most positive impression. Woody Harrelson is also good as Han's shady mentor, but he is typical Woody Harrelson.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" is a lot of fun. Yes, the movie wouldn't have been necessary, but it does justice to the popular character of the Star Wars universe. Lots of action, great effects, a little humour and a pinch of romance - just as you would expect from a great space adventure. And there are also some little surprises for fans. The few weaknesses are no reason not to buy a cinema ticket immediately and to dive again into a far, far away galaxy a long time ago! Absolutely worth seeing!
