Film: The studio Warner Bros has a problem: The people in charge are sitting on a real source of gold with the rights to the characters from the DC Comics, but - with the exception of the Batman movies - they somehow don't manage to get them right. While the MARVEL films became more and more successful and were celebrated by viewers and critics alike, Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" fell far short of expectations and "Green Lantern" proved to be a complete disaster in every respect. Under the leadership of Zack Snyder the DC universe was to become a success story for the studio after all. Snyder's "Man of Steel" was commercially a respectable success, but could only satisfy the fans to a limited extent. Therefore, a clear continuation was dispensed with and the duel of the giants "Batman v. Superman" was intended to make the competition of Marvel look old. This film was also a financial success with almost 900 million dollars in takings, but not to the extent one had hoped for. The film was also torn apart by critics and many fans. By now at the latest it must have been clear to those responsible that they must change something if the DC universe is to survive on the big screen in the long term and bring the studio strong profits. And so now all hope is placed on the anti-heroes of the "Suicide Squad", who are supposed to offer the fans what the previous DC movies lacked: Lots of fun!

The film focuses on a troupe of super villains, including the hit man Deadshot (Will Smith), the completely insane Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), the explosive Diablo (Jay Hernandez) or the powerful thief Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and the biting killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). Together, they are recruited by agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to protect the world from the dangers that have threatened humanity since the emergence of the allegedly killed Superman. But it is precisely by attempting to form an effective unit against potential enemies with superhuman capabilities that a threat of unprecedented proportions is unleashed that cannot be defeated with conventional weapons. But luckily there is now the Suicide Squad! But will the villains with their very special abilities really risk their lives in the fight for the good?

The first trailers for "Suicide Squad" were great. The marketing team really deserves a lot of praise here. The perfect interplay of cult songs, cool humor and action made the movie a great success and made you forget any trouble about "Batman v. Superman". Unfortunately, the movie can't quite live up to what the trailers promised. But first of all to the positive aspects - and fortunately there are a lot of them. First of all, there is Will Smith, who finally gets to show the coolness and charisma that made him a superstar again. He is finally the action star again, who always has a casual saying on his lips and who does a lot of bad things, but at the same time is allowed to show his big heart, which is why you just can't be angry with him as a viewer.

Nevertheless, Will Smith is not the star of the movie. This honor is clearly due to Margot Robbie, his female co-star from the gangster comedy "Focus". How Robbie comic book darling Harley Quinn comes to life here is simply great. The mixture of sexy, completely crazy, funny and ice-cold makes Joker's lover one of the best and most interesting characters in the entire DC universe. Especially when you realize that behind her crazy, cynical facade there is a lot of sadness and the longing for something completely different, then this already fascinating character becomes even more interesting. And Margot Robbie manages to disappear completely into this character. She is Harley Quinn and makes the film worth seeing with this grandiose performance alone.

However, this immediately leads to one of the weaknesses of the film. Because alongside Margot Robbie and Will Smith, the other members of the Suicide Squad are almost degraded to marginal figures. This can be recognized by the fact that the sequences in which they are presented become shorter and shorter. If Deadshot and Harley Quinn are still several minutes dedicated, Captain Boomerang or Diablo are only very short scenes. And with Slipknot only a short mention is enough - which is not tragic either, because two minutes later he is not with us anymore. And then there is of course the Joker, with which a lot of advertising was done. So you might think he's one of the main characters. Far from it: This popular villain only appears in a few short scenes. Although these are important for the story around Harley Quinn and for a possible sequel, they are rather secondary for the movie itself.

You can get excited. But when you take a closer look, this may even prove to be a very clever move on the part of the makers. It was clear that each new Joker would be compared to Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning performance. If the Joker had been a main character, this comparison would have stood above everything and would have dominated all reporting. However, Jared Leto's completely differently drawn Joker could be established almost incidentally and can take on a bigger role in the next movie, without the oversized shadow of Ledger's legacy laying over Leto's performance, which admittedly takes some getting used to.

Another weakness of the movie is the big bad guy. It should be no secret that this is Enchantress, played by Cara Delevingne. Though June Moore's first transformation into Enchantress is a really great one, Delevingne lacks the talent to let the evil witch credibly pose the threat that the members of the Suicide Squad are supposed to face here. Looking evil and fidgeting around a little doesn't make a good bad guy. The fact that this part of the movie doesn't work out is not only because of Cara Delevingne, but also because of David Ayers production, which drifts too much into the scheme F and again offers exactly what you get in almost every superhero movie. And that just gets boring in the long run.

All this prevents "Suicide Squad" from becoming the movie because the DC film universe needed it so badly right now. Nevertheless: The movie offers a lot of fun, sometimes extremely good entertainment, a little refreshing self-irony and cool mini appearances of Batman and another Justice League hero. Those who don't expect a masterpiece and can come to terms with a few weaknesses will definitely be entertained. And if you like "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman" as I did in spite of all justified criticism, you shouldn't miss this first and certainly not last screen appearance of the DC antiheroes. Therefore, the rule is With small restrictions absolutely worth seeing!

>The Extended Cut: In contrast to "Batman v Superman", for example, the almost 12 minutes longer Extended Cut of "Suicide Squad" doesn't succeed in ironing out the weaknesses of the film even in the beginning. The additional scenes are sometimes quite nice to watch, but only marginally enrich the movie. Anyone who has had problems with the cinema version will not become a fan of the long version. But if you like the shorter version, you'll get some really good additional moments, which make sure that the Extended Cut is the version you should put into the player!

Picture + sound: The audiovisual realisation of the film for Blu-ray can be convincing in almost every respect. The image has a pleasant depth and excellent sharpness of detail. The atmospheric colour mixture also supports the very positive overall impression, which is not disturbed by blurring or other weaknesses even in the darker moments. The powerful sound is available in an extremely lively Dolby Atmos mix (cinema version) or in a decent Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, which makes it really crack in almost every second with small or big sound effects on all channels. What more could you want? Very good.

Extras: In addition to the longer film version, the Blu-ray also offers Making of Featurettes about the origins of Task Force X (approx. 23:08 min.), about the director's intentions (approx. 9:37 min.), the Joker and Harley Quinn (approx. 14:29 min.), as well as the training of the actors for the action sequences (approx. 9 min.). In addition there are short documentaries about the weapons (about 11:48 min.) and the epic fights (about 10:54 min.). A gag reel (approx. 2:04 min.) and a somewhat longer trailer with the title "Fire test for Task Force X" (approx. 4:19 min.) round off the bonus material. Good.

Fazit: Whether in the cinema version or as an extended cut - "Suicide Squad" is a step in the right direction, but suffers from the same problems that the other films from the younger DC universe had to struggle with. However, a convincing Will Smith and the great Margot Robbie at least comfort us about some weaknesses and make these anti-heroes a fun comic strip fun. Blu-ray is technically at a good to very good level. The bonus material is worth seeing, but could have been a bit more extensive. In the end this is enough for a satisfied: Recommendable!
