The majority of children in the USA have fallen victim to a mysterious disease. Those who have survived have extraordinary powers. Some of them are only particularly intelligent. But there are a few children who have powers beyond imagination. A reason for the adults to send the children to so-called "rehabilitation camps", where they are divided into colours according to their abilities. Only those who are classified red or orange will be killed immediately. Ten-year-old Ruby is also considered an orange - and therefore particularly dangerous. But her abilities make it possible for her to be classified as green and therefore harmless. Ruby (Amandla Stenberg), who has grown into a teenager in the meantime, lives in the camp for six years before she is unmasked. But before she is eliminated, she is rescued by a mysterious woman (Mandy Moore). But the girl cannot trust her either, which is why she dares to flee together with a small group of other teenagers. Their destination is East River, a place where other children supposedly live in safety. But the way there is dangerous, especially since a particularly unscrupulous bounty hunter (Gwendoline Christie) has set out to hunt Ruby…

"The Darkest Minds - Die Überlebenden" is an attempt to create a new "Panem". A popular Young Adult trilogy served as a model here as well. The first volume in Alexandra Bracken's bestselling series provided the basis for Jennifer Yuh Nelson's live-action directorial debut, which had previously produced animated films such as "Kung Fu Panda 2". With this schema-F dystopia, however, she seems to have been somewhat overwhelmed. The film seems to have been cobbled together with great effort from set pieces from other works. Whether it's "X-Men" or "Divergent - The Determination" - almost everything you get here has already been told.

That wouldn't be too bad if a gripping arc of tension were to be created here. But he, like the rest of the film, remains consistently mediocre. Neither the characters nor the story are really worked out, so that a few stenciled characters fight their way through a plot framework dominated by clichés. The only thing from which this book adaptation can profit is the strong leading actress. Amandla Stenberg, who made her first major appearance as Rue in "Die Tribute von Panem" and was already the best aspect of the film in the teen romance "Du neben mir", can play convincingly against the weak script with a mixture of innocence and strength. Unfortunately, their co-stars only manage this to a limited extent.

"The Darkest Minds - Die Überlebenden" is not really bad, but rather completely irrelevant. As a pilot for a TV series, the whole thing would be okay, but as a great cinematic adventure, the film is very weak compared to other representatives of his guild. Despite the good leading actress and some really good moments, there is only one thing that is rather restrained even for the target group: Worth seeing!   ]
