Contents: It is easy to succumb to the temptation to see the USA as a whole without realizing the enormous diversity of nature, urban architecture, culture and mentality. A glance along the east coast is enough to see how many different facets the United States has to offer. This is now impressively illustrated by the very nice documentary series "The East Coast of the USA". In a total of five episodes, she takes the viewer on a journey from Florida via the Southern States and New York to New England, New Hampshire and Maine. Impressive aerial photographs and fascinating landscapes alternate with interesting portraits of ordinary inhabitants of these regions.
The spectator flies over the legendary Miami Beach with its famous Ocean Drive, past the Cape Canaveral spaceport over extensive citrus fruit plantations, can view the striking water tanks on the rooftops of New York from a bird's eye view, dive for oysters off Long Island, pay a short visit to the elite university Yale or enjoy luxury on the Hamptons. During this trip you will meet a leg amputee kite surfer, a passionate muscle car lover from Daytona, a farm owner from Georgia and a photographer from Coney Island, look over the shoulder of a real estate agent on the Hamptons, watch a basket weaver in Nantucket doing his traditional craft or marvel at vegetable gardening on the rooftops of Boston.
The makers of the series have succeeded very well not only in capturing the diversity of the landscape along the east coast, but also in showing how different the mentality of the people can be in the individual regions. The Florida Keys, for example, have an extremely relaxed attitude to life, still marked by the former hippie culture, while the area around Newport is a sophisticated luxury with a European touch. In a small village on the coast, a singing cook leads a rather relaxed life, while a bicycle courier in New York hardly finds peace. There are very interesting and extremely different characters, which are introduced here - and exactly this makes not only the whole east coast, but also this five-part series so exciting.
"The east coast of the USA" lives however primarily from the wonderful pictures, which were mostly captured by a helicopter camera. The flight over the roofs of New York is just as impressive as the flight over deserted coastal regions, crowded beaches or wide fields. If you like thrilling country portraits and exciting travel documentaries, you should definitely buy this double DVD. Absolutely worth seeing!
Picture + sound: The picture quality of the series is really excellent. The image sharpness is also at a very high level with smaller details, the colours appear absolutely natural and dirt or other image disturbances are absolutely in vain. The stereo sound is not very spectacular, as it is usually determined by the very centrally mixed voice-over commentary. But here and there also smaller ambient noises and the music bring some dynamics into the action. Good!
Extras: There is no bonus material on the double DVD.
Result: "The East Coast of the USA" is a very interesting and fantastically filmed documentary series, which takes the viewer with fascinating pictures and entertaining portraits on an entertaining and absolutely worth seeing journey from Florida via the southern states and New York to New Hampshire and Maine, revealing the incredible scenic and cultural diversity of the American east coast. If you like rousing country portraits or nature documentaries and if you are a fan of the USA, you should definitely take a look here!
