Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private (spoken of The Fantastic Four), the secret stars of the three "Madagascar" movies and heroes of a TV series, can now finally have their own screen adventure. In "The Penguins of Madagascar" the four penguins are confronted with the evil Dr. Octavius Brine, who is tired of always standing in the shadow of the penguins so popular with zoo visitors. That's why he developed a weapon that could be dangerous not only for Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, but for all penguins. To thwart Octavius' diabolical plan, the four undercover birds must join forces with the elite agents of "Nordwind". But this cooperation does not become easy, because Skipper and their leader "secretly" come into conflict again and again. Not exactly the best conditions for saving the world…
With "The Penguins of Madagascar", Eric Darnell ("Madagascar 1-3") and Simon J. Smith ("Bee Movie") staged a turbulent animation adventure, which just far enough away from the "Madagascar" movies to have a certain recognition value, without seeming like a tired infusion. After a short introduction, which shows how the four penguins found each other, follows a wonderful self-ironic excursion to the end of "Madagascar 3", from which the new adventure of the penguins starts. This ignites a real gag firework in the first twenty minutes with some wonderful ideas, which do not only make children laugh heartily.
When the penguins fight against the super villain Octavius in best James Bond manner and a wild chase through Venice with his henchmen, then the fun factor of the movie rushes all the way to the top. And that's where he stays when skippers and co. in the main office of "Nordwind" cause a lot of chaos. It's only in the last third that the hustle and bustle takes over, so that much of the original charm of the movie is lost. Surely, younger spectators in particular will have a lot of fun in the turbulent final. But unfortunately there's not much of the inventiveness that makes up the first act anymore.
The animations are clearly based on the style of the "Madagascar" movies, using some really good 3D effects. And also the dubbing can be described as well done, whereby especially the guys from the Fantastic Four do their job well again. All in all, "The Penguins from Madagascar" might not be a real hit, but this somewhat different agent comedy is a lot of fun. And despite some weaknesses Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private have definitely shown that they are amusing (and of course cute) enough to wear a movie alone without their "Madagascar"-colleagues. With enough good gags in their luggage and some really original action sequences they make sure that all fans of the four penguins get their money's worth. And despite all weaknesses there is still a clear one: absolutely worth seeing!
