Claire (Juliette Binoche) is desperate. After she was abandoned by her husband for a younger one, her affair with the much younger Ludo also seems to be heading for a safe ending. The single mother knows that with her 50 years she can no longer keep up with the younger admirers. To be on the safe side, she wants to spy on Ludo on Facebook. But she creates a wrong profile and comes into contact with Alex (François Civil), Ludo's best friend. He is quickly fascinated by the supposedly 24-year-old Clara and a lively exchange develops between the two, which soon becomes a virtual flirt. Claire tries to maintain the beautiful appearance of the virtual world, but Alex wants to break out of it and really meet Clara. Now Claire must make a serious decision…
Very freely based on a novel by Camille Laurens, director Safy Nebbou tells in "The way you want me" is the story of a woman who, in her affair with a younger man, desperately clings to the feeling of being desired - a feeling that was stolen from her by her husband. It is the story of a woman who then loses herself in a lie, since the life she lives in the anonymity of the Internet seems to be much more passionate, intimate and sensual than reality. But when reality catches up with her, she is not ready to give up her dream, so that reality and wishful thinking become more and more mixed.
The whole thing becomes a "what if… scenario that has some unexpected twists in store. As a viewer, at some point you don't even know what's really happening and what's going on in the literary lecturer's imagination. Safy Nebbou nevertheless succeeds in making every moment seem emotionally big. There are especially two moments that should actually lose their power because they could not be reality. Nevertheless, they work very well and hit the audience right into the heart.
In principle, what Claire does is absolutely reprehensible. But you can understand them somehow, too, so that you wish with every Happy End touch that there could somehow be a future for Claire and Alex. Especially the strong play of Juliette Binoche gives the story its credibility. "The way you want me" is a rousing love drama about loneliness, longings and love in times of the internet. Absolutely worth seeing!
