Doug Harris (Josh Gad) can hardly believe it: in a few days he will lead an absolute dream woman Gretchen (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) in front of the altar. Too bad, though, that the nerdy loner has no friends who would be willing to celebrate this happiness with him as his best man. Doug doesn't want to admit that in front of his future wife, who dreams of the perfect wedding. And so he has no choice but to call on the services of Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart). His company has specialized in mediating to losers like Doug best man - of course not only completely discreet, but also enormously credible. But since Doug is the first customer to book the ultimate luxury package, because he needs several witnesses at the same time, Jimmy, who is otherwise so perfectly organized, comes under pressure. He has to recruit new staff and work out the perfect background story for everyone, so that Gretchen doesn't notice the scam. A turbulent race against time begins, in which something happens that Jimmy has so far professionally avoided: his customer Doug grows really close to his heart and a real male friendship could emerge from the job…
Director and scriptwriter Jeremy Garelick delivers a very conventional US comedy with his feature film debut "Die Trauzeugen AG", which strongly reminds of a mixture of "Hitch - Der Date-Doktor" and "Hangover". The "hitch" elements work really well in themselves. Kevin Hart ("Ride Along") takes his otherwise always hyperactive and loud game back pleasantly. Especially in the scenes in the first third, which show him on different commissions, Hart delivers a really funny and charming performance. Josh Gad can also convince as a clumsy nerd and quickly win the sympathies of the audience. Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, a sexy dream woman who has found a rather unusual partner, plays exactly the same role as in the hit sitcom "The Big Bang Theory", where as Gretchen she is much less sympathetic than Penny.
The gag density is pleasingly high in the first 40 minutes, where Garelick rarely falls back on extremely rough and flat humor. Sure, the jokes are not very profound here either, but the great embarrassments are not there at first. But just when you as the viewer believe that this is a pleasantly charming comedy, Jimmy and his buddies are hosting a bachelor party for Doug. And now the movie seems to want to catch up on all the rough stuff that has so far been so skilfully avoided. And here, where the film enters the "Hangover" terrain, the entertainment value drops with the level.
Because after too many movies have tried to sail in the "Hangover" waters, the jokes that are mainly played out in the lower parts of the body and that throw any form of subtle wit into the wind and are instead served with a sledgehammer are neither funny nor shocking. Instead, boredom and unspeakable moments of foreign shame dominate the action. Even in the last third there are still some scenes that work quite well. But overall it becomes clear that Garelick simply gave away much of the potential of his comedy through the exaggerated use of flat faecal humor.
The mixture of simply knitted, but nice gags and underground grossities is so unbalanced that the film has become too good for "Hangover" fans, but too flat for lovers of US comedies like "Hitch - The Date Doctor". In view of the really amusing basic idea and the promising beginning this is really a pity. There are still enough good scenes that prevent "Die Trauzeugen AG" from becoming a total flop. But unfortunately it is not enough for an unclouded "worth seeing". The really great final gag, which at least all fans of the series "Lost" can laugh about, can't change that much!
