Elvis is to blame for everything: American moments in Frankfurt

Frankfurt is said to be the most American city in Germany. As someone who moved here, I'm surprised. Is it because of the skyline. Probably. The status of the former occupation zone? Also possible. Or is Elvis to blame for everything? But he's long dead and the small, peaceful Friedberg, where he was once stationed, doesn't make a summer or Frankfurt a dependency under the star-spangled banner. Maybe it's a mixture of everything, and even more: the internationality. The proximity to finance. Who doesn't hear a lot of English here on the Gass'? And little Frankfurt always lovingly calls itself "Mainhattan"; although the connections to NYC cannot be denied, even if in miniature: bull and bear, financial center, international scene, tradition of buying and trading, close relationship to the enterprising Dutch neighbors. In addition, there is the parallel of freedom - symbolized in New York by the Statue of Liberty, in our country the Paulskirche is considered the "cradle of freedom", which American President John F. Kennedy reminded us of during his visit in June 1963. Our American friends are currently making a big splash in the race for the presidential candidates; Americans in Frankfurt don't want to be left out: the Democrats recently held their polling station in the Australian sports bar "Yours" in the Schiller-Passage. One language unites ;-) But if you really want to bite into a burger, stop by "Good Fellas", where you'll also find the popular "Philly Steak" on the menu: Steak topped with cheese from - of course - Philadelphia. Big plus: the Cesar Salad. The for some time very popular Maxie Eisen in the Bahnhofsviertel has lost none of its cool habitus, but unfortunately has not caught up in culinary terms. True, it still offers the delicious pastrami sandwich. But the "Tuna Melt", tuna sandwich topped with cheese, was not worth mentioning and unfortunately the Cesar Salad does not trigger any screams of enthusiasm either. Given the prices, that's unfortunate. For a detour into New Orleans Creole cuisine, head to King Creole . What's an option after dinner? Perhaps a trip to the theater or the movies? The English Theatre has a gem of a special kind on its schedule: award-winning American films, independent and contemporary, are always on Mondays. The Volkshochschule is also a real treasure chest with its smart, entertaining courses such as "Read, watch, and speak about America" . Almost unlimited possibilities to get a little closer to the country of our longing in Frankfurt.
