Adorno and Goethe certainly enjoyed indulging themselves. Whether that included a gin, though, I don't know. That cool James Bond, invented by an Englishman, would surely be half as debonair without his martinis is, of course, obvious. Because what his fans have been ordering for a long time at the bars of this world is now also celebrating its triumph in Germany and in our city: gin. Main ingredient of many cocktails, classic ingredient of the said martini.

Why? Because gin and culture go together as well as apple pie with whipped cream. Or our Frankfurter Grie' Soß with potatoes and egg. Because, of course, the juniper spirit doesn't stop at the local shrines: everywhere you can buy city-specific stuff, you'll recently find a sauce mix with alcohol in it!

From the Great Gatsby to successful crime writer Raymond Chandler, literati love gin, which we have our Dutch neighbours to thank for. There it is known as genever. Thus, my favorite author F.Scott Fitzgerald had a "Gin Rickey" mixed for his wife Daisy in Chapter Seven of the Book of Tom. And the most classic of all, Casablanca? Of course. In the original English, Humphrey Bogart wails about meeting his lost love Ingrid Bergman again, ""Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine" ("Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she must walk into mine.")

What is gin anyway I asked myself: gin is a juniper spirit flavored with what are called botanicals. These can be berries, barks, seeds, fruits, fruit peels, spices and herbs of all kinds. Herbs? Well? Can you already see the Frankfurt version in your mind's eye?

Where can we find gin in Frankfurt?
