The history of Frankfurt is a story full of unbelievabilities. Christoph Jenisch has now compiled some of these curiosities in his book "Buffalo Bill im Palmengarten" and turned them into an extremely entertaining whole. Thus the reader experiences for instance, how the Main metropolis really came to its name. The legend of the Frankish king who was able to cross the Main with the help of a ford is exposed by Jenisch as pure fiction. For it was actually Frank, god of schnapps and dirty songs, who in the guise of an ox impregnated the constantly nagging daughter of a southern Hessian beer brewer at a particularly romantic spot on the Main, who was responsible for the city's name. The reader learns why here, as well as the outrageous story of how the Bornheimer Kerb led to the cathedral burning down and, of course, where the Green Sauce really comes from. And of course the mystery is solved, why the Frankfurter is always so incredibly "gut" moody.

"Buffalo Bill in the Palmengarten" presents the history of Frankfurt as it really happened - or so similar at least. Always told with a twinkle in his eye and plenty of typical Frankfurt charm, Frankfurt-born Christoph Jenisch guides his readers through the history of the Main metropolis and makes it clear why Frankfurt is "of course the best and most beautiful city of all", one of the reasons why the Frankfurter is so reluctant to leave his home.

What makes this book so entertaining and amusing is that the stories are told in a way that is entertaining to read for both Frankfurters and those unfamiliar with the place. However, Frankfurters will have a little more fun, because the many allusions to local peculiarities and incidents - such as from the success story of Eintracht or the constant rivalry with Offenbach - will hardly be understood as a comic sideswipe by such readers, who know Frankfurt only as a trade fair city. The Frankfurter, however, especially in connection with a "guude Schoppe", is always animated to a broad grin.

For non-Frankfurter, however, the book is also recommended, especially if a visit to the Main metropolis is planned. For here you will learn what you must not do under any circumstances if you want to get back home unscathed. This refers primarily to the ordering of Äppelwoi or the correct consumption of Handkäs. If you make a faux pas here, you may end up experiencing Frankfurt hospitality to the fullest.

"Buffalo Bill im Palmengarten" is a delicious journey through Frankfurt's history, which on the one hand cultivates the typical characteristics of the Frankfurters, but on the other hand always takes itself not too seriously with a charming wink. If you think you already know everything about Frankfurt am Main, or if you just want to be entertained with a lot of local color, you should definitely read this book
