The Rhein-Main Region does not stand out as an economic location dominated by airports and banks. If you venture away from the urban centers, you may discover that the region also has an incredible diversity in terms of history and nature that is wonderful to explore on foot. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has dedicated a series of walks to the enormous diversity of the landscape on the Rhine and Main. FAZ columnist Thomas F. Klein has now compiled some of the most beautiful and interesting tours in a book.

"Ausflüge in und um Rhein-Main" presents 30 of these selected hikes and takes the reader to Butzbach on the trail of the Celts, to the imposing Felsenmeer in Lautertal-Reichenbach, to the picturesque landscape of the Schwanheimer Düne, to the Wiesbadener Fasanerie or, of course, to the Saalburg in Bad Homburg. Popular, rather touristy destinations alternate again and again with beautiful insider tips, which allow a particularly versatile acquaintance with the region.

The structure of the respective contributions is designed very descriptive and helpful. Thus, first the special features of the destinations are presented to make the reader want to consider hiking there in the first place. Then the hiking route is described, so that one can get a good idea of whether one is confident in taking this route, what to look out for and how much time to allow. The most important information such as length, approach, connection to public transport, possibilities to stop for refreshments and opening hours of museums and sights are summarized again. The whole is rounded off by numerous illustrations. This adds to the impact of the already handsome descriptions.

"Excursions in and around Rhine-Main" is a beautiful compilation of walking tours through the region that simply makes you want to slip into your sturdy shoes, strap on your backpack and explore the small and large sights that surround us here. Simply visit the "Canyon" near Mühlheim am Main, try your hand as an amateur archaeologist in the Messel Pit or enjoy the beauty of the Pfungstädter Moor - thanks to the many suggestions and information in this book, there really is no longer any reason to just think about it. So if you want to go on a search for historical traces or just enjoy nature, this book is a very helpful companion. Absolutely recommendable!
