The artist B?CK has drawn a wonderful cartoon in which a couple strolls through a typical city center. In the background you can see the usual chain stores. The text for this image reads: "Darling, let me google what city we are in right now"! Sounds exaggerated, but it's not really far from reality. More and more small traditional shops are being pushed out of the centres, which are dominated by the same chain stores. And somehow it all looks the same. The reason for this is, of course, easy to find: where goods are offered at low prices, people often buy more. Unfortunately, consumers put up with too many underpaid workers and low-quality materials.

The more important it is that smaller manufacturers from the region are supported. Their products may be a little more expensive, but buyers know where they come from. In "Handgefertigt!" Susanne Stahl presents some such manufactories from Frankfurt and the surrounding area. Whether ceramics, children's fashion, lampshades, loudspeakers or dolls, whether goldsmith's work, shoes, paper objects, flowers or leather gloves - here really many different facets of the term "Handgefertigt" are covered.

Neben hilfreichen Informationen über die einzelnen Werkstätten - wie Adressen, Öffnungszeiten, Webauftritt usw. - Susanne Stahl presents the individual businesses in short accompanying texts. These are supplemented by numerous photos, which provide a good insight into the work of the respective manufactories and their range of products. In this way, a total of thirty selected manufactories from Frankfurt and the surrounding area are presented, and the reader is quickly impressed by the truly diverse range of products on offer beyond the big shopping temples. And if you want to give your creativity free rein after reading this booklet, you will find some information about courses and workshops in the region at the end.

If you value knowing where something you spend your money on comes from and if you like to support manufacturers from the region, you should definitely go on a little journey through the manufactories in and around Frankfurt with the help of this book. Absolutely recommendable!
