After the district series "Die schönsten Streifzüge durch Frankfurt" got off to a very promising start with the first two volumes on "Bornheim" and "Sachsenhausen", the format enters its third round with a visit to "Nordend". In terms of structure, this volume also remains true to the line of its predecessors. Thus, the Nordend, its inhabitants and its history is first briefly introduced. Already here it becomes clear that Jörg Harraschain, one of the two authors of the book, has lived in the Nordend for forty years and loves his district and the other Nordenders (or Nordender). Interesting facts, such as the difficulty of accurately defining the boundaries of Nordend, are mixed with tongue-in-cheek self-irony, making the booklet a great pleasure to read.

A walking tour then takes us through the sights of a neighborhood that enjoys great popularity, especially among young families and artists. From the Hessian Monument via the lower Berger Strasse, past the University of Applied Sciences and the German National Library to the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation and back at the main cemetery to the Holzhausen quarter with the picturesque Holzhausenschlösschen, this nice tour leads. Again, the information is conveyed compactly and embellished with numerous illustrations.

Afterwards, the book allows the reader an excursion to the parks of the Nordend, such as the Chinesischer garten, before pointing out the various possibilities for shopping and eating out. Here the legendary Stalburg Theatre and the no less legendary ice cream of the ice Christina may not be missing, as well as the Nibelungenschänke, the Café Größenwahn, the Terra Nova with its delicious pizza, the children's bookstore Tatzelwurm or the Ypsilon bookstore on Berger Street. There are no real surprises here for northerners, but you will be reminded of where you have long wanted to go at some of the places featured.

Festivals and leisure facilities are the focus of the penultimate chapter. Here the two so different cinemas of the quarter, the multiplex CineStar Metropolis and the lovable program cinema Mal Sehn`, belong likewise to the highlights, like the unusual museum EXPLORA, which is absolutely worth a visit not only because of the many mad 3D pictures and Mitmach actions. Also the popular festival on the Untere Berger Strasse and the open air theater STOFFEL are presented here in more detail.

Last, but not least, the prominent residents of the Nordend are the focus of the book. Joschka Fischer, "Kultur-Pate" Michi Herl, the unforgettable Liesl Christ, writer Stefanie Zweig or travesty artist and dance school director Bäppi la Belle are just a few of the well-known names associated with the Nordend and share responsibility for giving this quarter a very special flair. As culturally and culinary diverse as its inhabitants, green and yet very close to the city centre, these are all factors that make the Nordend so popular. Jörg Harraschain and Holger Ehling have managed to convey precisely these aspects of life in the Nordend in their book. And that's exactly what makes this foray through Frankfurt then: absolutely recommendable!
