Content: It's an almost unbelievable success story: a small company from the Danish province makes an invention that revolutionizes the toy market permanently. Small stones with a patented plug-in system become a hit all over the world. But after the great success comes the deep fall and the company is on the verge of bankruptcy. Only a drastic change in the product range saves the company and makes it the market leader again. To date, LEGO has sold over 400 billion (!) bricks worldwide. This success story alone would be worth a documentary. But LEGO still has a unique fan community beyond the children's rooms, which has finally helped the little bricks to absolute cult status. There are now Lego fairs, Lego films, Lego art, Lego swap meets and and and.

A LEGO Brickumentary is an entertaining documentary that focuses primarily on the cult of the LEGO bricks. The history of the company, its fascinating rise, near-ending, and subsequent salvation through a drastic change of course, is covered relatively superficially and briefly. Much time, on the other hand, is spent on the fans around the world. And even the LEGO movie, which was released last year, gets a little bit of publicity. So if you want to learn more about the LEGO company, you might be disappointed by this movie. But those who enjoy the endless variety of what can be created with the bricks will be thoroughly entertained here.

Whether visiting various trade shows where fans interact or vie for the favor of other visitors with fascinating builds, peeking into the gallery of a New York artist who has used LEGO to create some fascinating works of art, or glimpsing the construction of a large model from the STAR WARS universe that is eventually unveiled in Times Square in New York, there are truly all facets of LEGO fandom to be seen here. What's fascinating here is that among the LEGO fanatics portrayed here, there are definitely people who have made careers out of their passion - for example, at LEGO itself - or have started their own businesses, such as selling weapons for LEGO figures, which don't exist in the original because they don't fit the company's philosophy.

The film also shows that the love of LEGO extends across all ages and social classes. And many celebrities have also been infected by the LEGO virus and have a brief word in the documentary. All the examples shown here have one thing in common: LEGO encourages creativity, in each case in their own unique way. Whether it's creating their own models, directing small LEGO films or creating art from LEGO bricks - it becomes clear that LEGO is much more than a simple toy. Crazy, original, fascinating and impressive - all this applies to what can be seen in this film. So if you also have a certain affinity for the plug system, which is as simple as it is ingenious, you shouldn't miss this nice documentary. Worth seeing!

Picture + Sound: Since only a data-reduced press sample was available for the test, no rating can be given here about the picture and sound quality of the DVD.

Extras: The disc has no bonus material to offer.

Conclusion: A LEGO Brickumentary is an entertaining trip into the colorful world of LEGO fandom. However, LEGO's interesting success story is handled a little too superficially. Instead, you get to meet fans from all over the world, admire LEGO art from New York or watch a giant STAR WARS model being built. If you are more interested in the LEGO cult than in the history of the company, you shouldn't miss this amusing movie. Recommended
