What Bushido can do, I can do for a long time. That's what rapper Sido must have thought when he set out to conquer not only the music charts but also the cinemas. But while his former rival and current colleague flopped with critics with his biographical feature film and also failed to entice the very large crowds into the cinemas, Sido is taking a slightly different approach with Blutzbrüdaz.

In the comedy, director Özgür Yildirim (Chiko) takes the audience back to the year 2000, where friends Otis (Sido) and Eddy (B-Tight) have long dreamed of a big career as rappers. But the road to success is rocky and hard - especially if, like the friends, you have no money and no connections. But the tide seems to turn when Fusco (Milton Welsh), a legend of the Berlin hip-hop scene, shows interest in a demo tape of the two. With the help of Otis' old buddy Adal (Alpa Gun), for whom the word checker seems to have been invented, Otis and Eddy are finally able to produce their demo, which then also hits like a bomb. Suddenly the record industry shows interest in the Blutzbrüdaz, and quickly the two are offered a major deal by star producer Facher (Tim Wilde). What at first glance looks like the goal of all dreams soon turns out to be absolute hell, especially for Otis, and he has to ask himself if he is willing to betray his ideals for success and money.

With the help of Fatih Akin's production company, among others, Yildirim has directed an almost satirical look at the commercialization of hip-hop, which is particularly surprising in that Sido and B-Tight deliver really decent acting performances, especially in comparison to Bushido. The obvious self-irony makes them really likeable. If Zeiten ändern Dich was rather unintentionally funny, the audience's laughter is quite intentional here. Sure, it doesn't always work perfectly, some lines literally fall flat, but on balance the comedic aspect of the film is quite convincing.

Very nicely captured is also the image of the mass hip-hop teen stars of the early 2000s. The first music video Facher shoots with the Blutzbrüdaz brings back amusing memories of videos by Marky Mark and similar commercially successful artists of the time, but which had little to nothing in common with authentic rap and hip hop.

Besides the authentic look and the convincing lead actors, the supporting characters are also among the film's major plus points. Alwara Höfels (Keinohrhasen), for example, delivers a very convincing performance as Otis' bitchy girlfriend, a far cry from the charming suavity she displayed in Til Schweiger's hit comedy. And also Claudia Eisinger (13 semesters), Milton Welsh and Tim Wilde fit perfectly into the acting very positive overall picture.

Together with the appropriate soundtrack, for which of course Sido himself is responsible, Blutzbrüdaz has become such a film, which should especially, but not only like the intended target audience well. Surely it might be an advantage to like Sido in order to really enjoy this movie. But even if you don't like the rapper, his music and the whole hip hop world, you will still be entertained surprisingly well. Certainly not an absolutely credible masterpiece, but without question a very positive surprise to end the year! Worth seeing
