Notorious hacker Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy) has gone into hiding. But like a phantom, she occasionally emerges from the darkness to help women who are being beaten, tortured and humiliated by men. That's how it's supposed to stay, but then a desperate scientist (Stephen Merchant) asks to steal a program he developed from the Americans. Lisbeth actually succeeds in stealing the program from the server of the US secret service. But what she doesn't know is that she has unwillingly played into the hands of a powerful secret organization. Her only confidant, journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnason) must now help her prevent the dangerous program from falling into the wrong hands. But she hasn't reckoned with who her mysterious adversary is.

Conspiracy is the film adaptation of the first novel about Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist not written by bestselling author Stieg Larsson, who died in 2004. Journalist and writer David Lagercrantz took on the characters and tried to spin their story further. This was only partially well received by fans and critics, but still sold well enough that Lagercrantz was allowed to publish another book in the series. And a film adaptation wasn't long in coming either. After David Fincher's US remake of Fade Away fell short of the studio's expectations, plans to adapt the two follow-up volumes with the same team were put on hold as well.

Instead, the cast was replaced and Conspiracy, a previously unfilmed novel, was adapted. The result is a solid action thriller, though it doesn't have much in common with the MILLENNIUM story anymore. Lisbeth Salander has been downgraded to a fighting Amazon and Mikael Blomkvist, strictly speaking, no longer plays a role. He really doesn't contribute anything at all to the plot of the film - he's seemingly only there because he simply belongs with Lisbeth Salander. Claire Foy is good as Lisbeth Salander, but unfortunately doesn't have the ability to bring the kind of intensity to the character that Noomi Rapace embodied so brilliantly.

All of these are reasons why Conspiracy should definitely be considered a standalone work. Because as such, the film works well. It is suspenseful, superbly executed visually, and well acted. Only with what Stieg Larsson once thought up, the whole thing has very little to do. If you manage to detach yourself from that, you will get two hours of entertaining suspense cinema. Not more, but also not less. And for that there is a deserved: Worth seeing!
