2010 has been a year of great success and defeat for Sandra Bullock. While she was able to accept a well-deserved Oscar for the surprise hit "Blind Side", her marriage fell apart just a short time later. And also professionally Bullock had to take a bitter defeat. In the USA, her comedy "Crazy for Steve" was a disaster and, on the night before the Oscars, brought her two Golden Raspberries - which Bullock was one of the few stars to accept herself. Now German moviegoers can see for themselves whether "Crazy for Steve" deserves this not really positive award, or whether the film is better than its reputation after all, as Bullock claimed when accepting the raspberries.

In the comedy Bullock plays the eccentric crossword puzzle designer Mary, who actually gets along quite well in her life. So Mary is less than thrilled about her parents setting her up on a blind date - until handsome Steve (Bradley Cooper) appears before her. Mary is immediately smitten and is sure: he's the one! That's why she doesn't waste any time and, as soon as she arrives in Steve's car, she pounces on the cameraman. Mary's impetuous nature and especially her inability to keep her mouth shut during lovemaking is just too much for him and so he makes off with a work-related excuse. But Mary believes in a twist of fate and follows her chosen one from one location to the next. And it soon becomes clear to the desperate Steve that the woman with the discreet red boots is literally crazy about him.

"Crazy for Steve" has, especially in the first few minutes, some really nice and funny moments. But after the promising beginning, disillusionment soon follows. The gags become more and more flat, the characters more and more unlikable and the story more and more silly. The good premise is only occasionally turned into something useful. The script can most likely be blamed for the fact that the film only succeeds in short moments. Its author Kim Barker was already responsible for the unspeakable "License to Marry", where she, as in "Crazy for Steve", repeatedly gave away good and funny ideas in favor of hysterical silliness.

That the actors here have little chance to play against the weak and unfunny script, is actually no wonder. The likeable eccentric was simply given by Sandra Bullock in "On the Stormy Way" much more charming and not quite as overwrought, Thomas Haden Church was simply leaps and bounds better in "Sideways" and even Bradley Cooper, since his performance in "Hangover" finally ascended to Hollywood's A-League, has rarely been so pale as in this machination. It's actually a shame that three actors who are so talented, especially in the comedic field, are sold so short. Maybe this is also the reason for the negative overall impression the film leaves.

Because to be quite honest: the worst film of the year is "Crazy for Steve" really not, there are simply too many successful gags. And Sandra Bullock doesn't really deserve the award for worst leading actress either, as many of her colleagues have delivered far more pathetic performances. But it also can't be denied that the comedy is not a very good and especially not a really funny movie, which uses the talent of its makers and actors only marginally. And therefore also applies: only for very loyal Sandra Bullock fans really worth seeing!
