One of the most famous monsters in movie history is back! In 28 Japanese films so far, Godzilla has caused fear and terror. Certain that he could build on this success, back in 1998 Roland Emmerich set out to make the Japanese cult monster respectable internationally. Although his film was commercially quite successful, it completely failed with critics and most especially Godzilla fans. In 2013, Gareth Edwards took a second stab at a worldwide Godzilla blockbuster. While his film had some very strong moments, it also had numerous weaknesses. Still, the box office was satisfying and so Godzilla is now coming back for another big screen appearance.

Some years have passed since Godzilla reduced San Francisco to rubble. Since then, more and more monsters of his kind have been appearing, leaving humans seemingly helpless against them. The members of the cryptozoological agency Monarch try to find a way to deal with this danger. But a device that could help them do so falls into the wrong hands. When the eco-terrorists around Jonah Alan (Charles Dance) then also awaken the three-headed King Ghidorah from his eternal hibernation, the end of humanity seems sealed. Now there is only one who can stop this monster: Godzilla!

No question, Michael Dougherty conjures up some great kaiju fights on screen in Godzilla II: King of Monsters, but he makes the same mistakes as his predecessor: For one, he allows a majority of these monster fights to take place in the dark, spiced up with a bit of rain, so you get relatively little to look at - not to mention that the already weak 3D effects are completely wasted as a result. The much more serious flaw, however, is that once again the focus is not on the monsters, but on the human protagonists most of the time. This is exactly what reveals how weak the script is. The characters are drawn absolutely flat and only give cliché-laden platitudes. You can't help but roll your eyes in annoyance.

If, however, you don't approach the film with the expectation of getting something even remotely substantial here and just want to see more monster action in the style of the first film - albeit much more and spectacular - including some scenes with fan-favorite Mothra, then this sequel definitely offers quite a high entertainment value. Let's hope that for the 2020 clash of Godzilla vs Kong, which is alluded to a bit in the film, a better script was written that doesn't just consist of clichés and really stupid mistakes like the ones made here (like when the sentence ALL systems are down is followed by a glimpse of a perfectly working sonar device. No, it's clear!). But all in all: For fans of part 1, despite some weaknesses, still worth watching!
