For true love, no path is too far, no task too difficult, and no obstacle too high that it cannot be overcome. The wonderfully light-hearted romantic comedy "Marcello Marcello" proves this in a very entertaining and original way.
On the small Italian island of Amatrello, it has always been the custom that on a girl's 18th birthday, all young men must bring her father a present. The father then decides which present he likes best and then grants the bearer a date with his now adult daughter. This tradition is also carried out in 1953. Eighteen-year-old fisherman's son Marcello (Francesco Mistichelli) is determined never to take part in the unromantic custom - until he catches sight of Elena (Elena Cucci), the mayor's daughter who has returned to Amatrello after a long absence and is about to celebrate her 18th birthday. Sure enough, Marcello has the perfect idea for a gift. But to get it, he must embark on a madcap odyssey that soon seems to involve almost the entire village.
"Marcello Marcello", based on the book "Marcello and the Course of Love" by Mark David Hatwood, is a wonderfully heartfelt summer comedy that boasts numerous original and endearing ideas and ends up being one of the finest declarations of love that cinema has had to offer in recent memory. Granted, some of the smaller gags overshoot the mark a bit and some scenes just work better than other moments. But in the end, it's not the little flaws that are remembered. At the end only a pleasant feeling remains and the desire to be able to submit such a proof of love to his / his loved one once (or to get made himself).
The Italo-Swiss director Denis Rabaglia has succeeded with "Marcello Marcello" in making a pleasantly unobtrusive comedy, which, in addition to the beautiful story, also boasts extremely seductive images, especially in summer, and unused and therefore very natural-looking young actors. If you are looking for romance in the cinema and at the same time hope for a refreshing summer feeling, you should not miss this enchanting work!
