Film: Miranda (Miranda Hart) doesn't really have it easy as a 1.85m tall woman. She's constantly being addressed as Sir, her boarding school friend Tilly (Sally Phillips) lectures her at every opportunity about how much better and more successful her life is, and her mother Penny (Patricia Hedge) doesn't miss a single embarrassing attempt to set Miranda up with a potential son-in-law in spec. And then there's Gary (Tom Ellis), who the owner of a novelty shop has had a crush on for some time. But whenever she makes even a small attempt to make advances to him, she puts her foot in her mouth. Only her childhood friend Stevie Sutton (Sarah Hadland) stands by her side with advice and support - or at least tries to. Because when Miranda stumbles from one embarrassing situation to the next, even the best advice can't really prevent the mess she leaves behind...

Miranda is a British comedy series that comedian Miranda Hart virtually wrote herself. Based on the semi-autobiographical radio comedy Miranda Hart`s Joke Shop, a pilot episode was initially directed, but was so well received that a full season was subsequently commissioned. The success of the series is due not only to its delicious blend of slapstick and wordplay. Hart's self-deprecating play and her direct interaction with the audience also make the series so amusing. For example, each episode begins with a monologue that hart addresses directly to the audience. But also in the further course of each episode she breaks the fourth wall again and again, for example by directly negating something she tells her counterpart by looking in the direction of the audience and shaking her head.

Strictly speaking, the series consists only of constantly repeating running gags, but they are always incorporated into new, abstruse everyday situations and therefore always work well. Also the wonderfully exaggerated characters such as the always politically incorrect mother Penny ensure that the quirky series can stand out from the crowd of British sitcoms. Even if some of the gags are difficult to translate into German, the German dubbing is overall very good. However, if you have a good knowledge of English (which is absolutely necessary due to the lack of subtitle options), you should definitely choose the original version, because only here can the wonderful dialogues unfold their full wit.

Subtle humor is not on the program here. You should already have a soft spot for some silly slapstick and for typical British humor to be able to laugh at the chaos queen Miranda. But then the series is so much fun that it is almost impossible not to want to watch all episodes of the first season at once. And that's why the series is-as I call it-absolutely worth watching!

Picture + Sound: The DVD's picture and sound are on a good level for a TV comedy series. The picture is clean, the colors coherent and the sharpness absolutely satisfactory. And the sound, mixed in stereo, is also perfectly adequate for a sitcom. Of course, this is no audiovisual revelation, but it serves its purpose in every respect. And for this there is then also a clear: Good!

Extras: Bonus material has the first season unfortunately not to offer.

Conclusion: Miranda is British comedy at its best. When the 1.85m tall title character, who is not infrequently addressed as Sir, steps from one faux pas into the next in her efforts to win the heart of her adored Gary and also has to deal with her eccentric mother, then there really is not a dry eye in the house, not least because of the self-deprecating play of Miranda Hart. The DVD box of the first season offers all six episodes in good picture and sound quality, only on bonus material the viewers have to do without. Nevertheless: For all fans of British comedy food absolutely recommendable!
