Open-air cinema Frankfurt in the Gallus

Open-air cinema Frankfurt in the Gallus

In summer, warm temperatures drive people outdoors. While the theaters keep their doors closed during the summer break, the live program in clubs and concert halls shrinks to a very manageable minimum and cinema operators complain about empty halls, the cultural events in many places in the city simply shifts outside. There is open-air theatre in Grüneburgpark, music and cabaret at Stoffel in Günthersburgpark, the Tangente Festival on the banks of the Main or the Sommerwerft with theatre, music and parties at Weseler Werft. But what Frankfurt has lacked so far in this colourful summer programme is a genuine open-air cinema. There are smaller open-air festivals and special events, such as Shorts at Moonlight in Höchst or the summer cinema in the garden of the Städel Museum. But anyone who wanted to experience regular cinema enjoyment under the open sky in the middle of the city centre has been searching in vain until now.

Johanna Süß and Gregor Maria Schubert, the organizers of the LICHTER Film Festival, also noticed this. And so in 2014 they teamed up with open-air cinema experienced Daniel Brettschneider, founder of Offenbach's Hafenkino, to finally give Frankfurt an outdoor cinema. After two successful summers in the Cantate-Saal, the open-air cinema is moving to the Gallus in 2016. With its atmospheric backyard, KORREKT offers the perfect location for the diverse cinema programme.

For the Freiluftkino Frankfurt 2016 is once again a real passion project by film lovers for film lovers. First and foremost, visitors should be able to enjoy beautiful films in a relaxed atmosphere, but they can also meet in the courtyard just under an hour before the film starts for an atmospheric end to the day with delicious food and refreshing drinks. The whole thing will start on 04 August with the cinema hit Straight outta Compton, accompanied by a block party with DJ Double D.

The program selection is pleasantly varied, so that really everyone will find a film for their personal taste. Whether you prefer arty program cinema fare (The Lobster), comedies, or dramas, the 15 films selected really do have something for everyone. Tarantino's The Hateful 8, the bloody horror thriller Green Room with Patrick Stewart and the sadly too early deceased Anton Yelchin as well as the Arthaus favourite Toni Erdmann are on the programme as well as the Oscar winners The Big Short and The Revenant. Our secret tip is Sing Street, a wonderful tribute to the 80s, which screens on 05/08.

As a special treat for all cineastes, all non-German language films will be shown in the original version with German subtitles!

So a visit to this outdoor cinema is an absolute must, so we can enjoy open air cinema in the city centre again in summer 2017!
