Bus driver Paterson (Adam Driver) lives in a small town named just like him. Every day on his tours, he draws inspiration from the passengers and the town for his poems, which he writes down during his lunch break. His days follow a consistent pattern, while his wife Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) is driven by a desire for constant change. Paterson lovingly supports her in all her ambitions, while she wants to nurture his talent for writing poetry. It's a perfect symbiosis that seems truly unshakeable.

With Paterson, Jim Jarmusch takes a very unexciting look at seven days in the life of Paterson and Laura. He does this in his trademark mix of extreme slowness, laconic humor, and quirky characters. No real story is told in the process. Although there are some small changes towards the end, the characters don't really develop over the course of the very plodding two hours. There are also no dramaturgical climaxes. Just a few, partly repetitive or only slightly varying snapshots. There are some really great moments, but all in all Paterson is one thing above all: extremely tiring.

When the young bus driver recites his not really good poems over and over again during his daily tours in voice-over commentary, it really gets on your nerves by the third day at the latest. And also Laura's always new craziness, which still seems charming at the beginning, quickly loses its charm. Sure, you can interpret a lot into many scenes and of course into the movie itself. And if you love Jim Jarmusch, you will definitely think Paterson is a masterpiece. But if you like to be told real stories in the cinema and want to see more than just minimalist facial expressions and the same motifs in constant rotation, you'll be close to despair by the Thursday in the week with Paterson and Laura at the latest.

Not even the moments where genuine genius shines through, or where wonderfully inappropriate humour shines through, change that. Therefore: this film is really only for diehard Jim Jarmusch fans and intrepid program cinema lovers. For everyone else: there really are better and especially cheaper ways to get bored. And that's why there is also only with significant restrictions a reserved: Worth seeing
