About the film

What stops us from being creative? What gets in our way? Together, director Hermann Vaske and his sidekick, US actor Michael Madsen, identify the opposing forces that act as beta-blockers to creative energy - censorship, self-censorship, money, fear, bureaucracy, compromise, distraction and the gatekeepers - it's an existential battle between the angels and demons of creativity. Attackers abound, lurking everywhere, threatening creative work. And ironically, the reasons not to be creative are often the triggers that motivate us to be even more creative.

Hermann Vaske: "Today, among other things, the age of the Anthropocene threatens the survival of us all. But this existential threat also leads us to explore new and disruptive ideas if we are to avoid catastrophe. Creativity may be threatened. But it is often this very threat that allows it to flourish. A dialectical synthesis of opposites. It's time we put creativity at the top of the pyramid."

Once again, Hermann Vaske manages a tour de force ride through the who's who of the creative scene with insights that are as astonishing as they are inspiring. In WHY ARE WE (NOT) CREATIVE? he also meets people who are activists for freedom, democracy and climate change, such as Joshua Wong from Hong Kong or Luisa Neubauer ("Fridays for Future").

Among others, MARINA ABRAMOVIC, SHIRIN NESHAT, MICHAEL MADSEN, BJÖRK, DAVID BOWIE, PUSSY RIOT, T. C. BOYLE, ISABELLA ROSSELLINI, WILLEM DAFOE, ANDREAS DRESEN, AI WEIWEI, DIANE KRUGER, JULIAN SCHNABEL, SEAN PENN, JIM JARMUSCH, VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, DENNIS HOPPER.

The production of the film was supported by HessenFilm, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and DFFF. Distribution funding by HessenFilm.
