Roger Kumble delivered arguably one of the best teen movies of the 90s twelve years ago with "Ice-Cold Angels". Now Kumble returns with the animal comedy "Reine Fellsache", which, however, has absolutely none of the cleverness and biting wit of his hit film and offers only the most bland family entertainment with crude hilarity.

Somewhere in the scenic Oregon wilderness, Dan Sanders (Brendan Fraser) is tasked with overseeing the construction of a housing development on behalf of his supposedly eco-minded company. But what Dan, who already lives on the building site with his family, didn't count on is that animals from Oregon's forests have banded together to conspire against the project manager. Raccoons, squirrels, birds, beavers and co. have only one goal: to make Dan's life hell and drive the humans out of their territory...

The most positive thing up front: although there is, of course, the obligatory "animals-dancing-funny-to-pop-songs-that-no-one-wants-to-listen-to" scene again, Roger Kumble deserves credit for not letting the animals blather. This prevents a complete debacle a la "Marmaduke", but even that can't really save the film. There are a few nice gags here and there, which could make not only small, but also older viewers laugh. But the bottom line is that infantile humor prevails here, which, like the drama within Dan's family that seems completely contrived, is a testament to the lack of originality in the script and production.

In addition, many of the actors act completely over the top. Brendan Fraser, who has shown talent in serious as well as comedic roles in many films, is of course at the forefront of this, but supporting actors like Ken Jeong, known from "Hangover", also lack any form of subtle comedy, which destroys any even remotely good idea from the start.

"Pure Furry Cause" is one of those movies that you can watch with the little ones on DVD or TV, that offers a few nice laughs, but is quickly forgotten, which is the best place for it. In the cinema, however, such a film has really nothing to look for. Therefore: only very conditionally worth seeing!
