Film: In the 80s, he was the coolest cop in town. A real guy, in fact, against whom even Don Johnson in "Miami Vice" was a smooth-talking wimp. But then a bullet sends Mick Brisgau (Henning Baum) into a coma, from which he awakens twenty years later. Amazingly quickly, Mick is fit on his feet and ready to resume his job. But he has to learn that a lot has changed in twenty years. His wife has been in a new relationship for years and his daughter calls her new husband Dad. And nothing is the same in the police force either. Instead of letting suspects run into his fist by pure chance, Mick is now expected to stick to fixed rules. And with the over-correct Andreas Kringge (Maximilian Grill), he's also given a partner who seems to spend more time programming his navigation system than actually hunting down criminals. And as if that wasn't bad enough, Mick also has to see a police psychiatrist on a regular basis, who - could it get any worse - is also a woman (Proschat Madani). But despite all these obstacles, Mick proves time and time again: he may not know how to Google someone, but he's a damn good cop...
With great macho sayings ("You may be more intelligent than most men, but that won't clean the kitchen either, baby") that would have made even Schimanski pale, a cool 80s soundtrack with songs by Queen, Man at Work, Falco, Dire Straits, Michael Jackson, Nena to Hubert Kah and with one of the most amusing police duos of recent times, "The Last Cop" can entertain for thirteen episodes. The star of the series is, of course, Henning Baum, who embodies the character of Mick Brisgau as the perfect mix of tough macho and sensitive bear. But this character would only be half as good if he didn't stand in direct contrast to Andreas Kringge, played no less superbly by Maximilian Grill. The two mismatched men form a dream duo that is also a wonderful example of true male friendship.
The relationship between Mick and the police psychologist Tanja Haffner reminds in some moments of the quarrels between Doctor House and "seiner" Cuddy, but Henning Baum and Proschat Madani have such a good chemistry that such comparisons dissolve into thin air after three episodes at the latest. Anyway, the cast is one of the great strengths of the series, because such a well-harmonizing ensemble, where even smaller roles are perfectly cast, is not often seen in German TV.
A very big praise is also due to the scriptwriters, who find especially in the dialogues the perfect mix of 80s sayings and dry humor and spice the whole thing with a little physical humor, supported by the wonderful facial expressions of Maximilian Grill, whereby again and again the most diverse areas of the humor center of the audience are served. And in between there is always enough time for emotions that don't seem contrived, a little drama and here and there even real suspense. "Der letzte Bulle" is therefore a real stroke of luck for the German TV landscape, a series with a lot of humor, charm and heart. Please more of it!
Picture + Sound: The technical quality of the DVDs is on a good TV level, with the picture the well-mixed colors and the satisfactory overall sharpness and the sound the cool 80s soundtrack can convince. For this, it gets a well-deserved overall: "Good"!
Extras: Unfortunately, there are no extras for the first season. Bonus material is only announced for season 2!
Conclusion: "The Last Cop" is an extremely entertaining crime series that plays with 80s crime clichés in a very endearing way, and also punctuates the whole thing with a great soundtrack. Rightly a great success, of which there may be many more seasons! The complete lack of bonus material is not that disappointing. A must for all who don't think of ice cream when they think of "Magnum", but of Hawaiian shirts and cool guys, and of course for all who appreciate entertaining, original crime fare from Germany.
