The Sandman has had a long career on TV. Whether in the East or West, the good night stories from the Sandman have shaped generations of children. For 50 years, the Sandman has been sweetening up bedtime for little viewers. With "Das Sandmännchen - Abenteuer im Traumland" the lovable cult figure has now made it to the big screen and enchants little moviegoers with an imaginative production and an endearing story.
So unlucky though. The Sandman lets his dream sand out of his sight and it is stolen by the evil Habumar, who wants to give everyone terrible nightmares. Alone, the Sandman will not manage to get his dream sand back. Therefore, he sends the sleeping sheep Nepomuk to the waking world to find a brave captain who will help with the dangerous mission. Too bad Nepomuk thinks that Miko is just such a brave captain and brings him with him to Dreamland. For Miko is anything but a great hero. But the Sandman believes in his new helper and sets out together with the boy and the sleeping sheep to put a stop to Habumar...
"The Sandman - Adventures in Dreamland" is a lovingly directed film for little viewers. However, only for the very young, who are actually still too young to go to the cinema. Even though for this target group the scenes with the evil Habumar might be a bit too scary in parts, on balance they will be very well entertained. This is primarily thanks to the very elaborate puppet animation technique, which has been implemented with great attention to detail. The set of Dreamland and the characters - most notably the cheeky but also lovable sleep sheep Nepomuk - are literally dreamlike and don't overwhelm little viewers with over-saturated imagery.
Although the story might be a bit boring for older children at times and the production is just too cloying for adult companions in the long run, "Das Sandmännchen - Abenteuer im Traumland" can still be considered a very good children's film on balance, which is very well suited to introduce small viewers to the experience of going to the cinema.
