What happens when animals on a farm are left alone from one day to the next to fend for themselves and protect themselves? The animal documentary "The Wild Farm" sets out to explore this question. In more than 12 weeks, Dominique Garingand Frédérique Goupil observed 200 animals in Dampierre-en-Bresse, France, and spun a fictional story around the fascinating, beautiful, funny and moving images their cameras captured. In it, the animals of a farm whose farmer is suddenly hospitalized must fend for themselves for ten days as they live on the "wild farm". They are on the lookout for food, have to defend the farm and its inhabitants from outside enemies, and take care of their own offspring. Sure, the images offered here, especially to the little viewers, have a high show value and great cuteness value. But it would have been advisable to let the pictures speak more for themselves. Instead, narrator Luise Bähr comments on every little scene, which can get a bit annoying in the long run. In a tone of voice clearly directed at small children, she sometimes simply says what can be seen on the screen, which is not only completely unnecessary, but also annoying in the long run - at least for older viewers. And there are supposed to be one or two adult moviegoers who are interested in beautifully made animal documentaries - even if they are presented in the form of a fictional story. Here less would have been clearly more. Nevertheless: for children "Die wilde Farm" is well worth seeing, even if here, as so often, before rather unpalatable truths once again the eyes are closed. But the really cute animal shots comfort over such weaknesses - and in the cinema, the world may still be all right!
