Content: You'd almost think Goody (Alicia Silverstone) and Stacy (Krysten Ritter) were two normal New York girls in their twenties. They work, they party, they flirt - all just the way young New York girls do. But the two friends are anything but normal. For Goody and Stacy are vampires who have sworn off consuming human blood, meet regularly with other vampires in the support group for ELFs (Eternal Life Forms), and try desperately to keep up with the developments of modern life. But their inherently relaxed vampire life is turned completely upside down when their creator, the eccentric bloodsucker Cisserus (Sigourney Weaver), doesn't adhere to the code of modern vampires with her antics and puts not only herself, but all of her children in danger. Now, of all times, Stacy also falls in love with the charming Joey (Dan Stevens), the son of vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing (Wallace Shawn), and for Goody, a chance reunion with Danny (Richard Lewis), her great love from the '70s, rekindles old and just completely inappropriate feelings. A normal vampire life is of course no longer to think of... Vamps reunites after more than 17 years actress Alicia Silverstone and director Amy Heckerling, the successful team of the cult comedy Clueless - What else. For their latest collaboration they have tried their hand at the currently so popular vampire genre, which they also wanted to take a few new sides with a very colorful, somewhat quirky comedy. This attempt actually succeeded in places. The film has some really original and funny ideas to offer, whereby the self-help group for ELFs and the speech of Malcolm McDowell as Vlad Tepish (vampire connoisseurs know that this is the template for the character of Count Dracula) are particular highlights. And Stacey's visit to the parents of her crush Dan (played by Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens) also has some very good laughs to offer. In addition to slightly quirkier moments, which undoubtedly include Sigourney Weaver's good-humoured performances as the crazed vampire princess, Hackerling also tries to include some quiet, emotional moments throughout. When Goody remembers her long life and her love for Danny, and he sacrificially cares for his terminally ill wife, the director demonstrates a pretty good knack for honest-seeming emotion. Unfortunately, the mix between over-the-top silliness and such more emotional scenes doesn't always want to work, making for a less than harmonious overall film. Also, Heckerling seems too uptight about trying to be flashy, colorful and quirky. And that comes at the expense of the level of the gags, which fall a little flat at times. The good-humored cast, led by a charming Alicia Silverstone and a delicious Krysten Ritter (Apartment 23) and the amusing ideas, with which the turbulent action can come up with again and again, consoles a little over the slightly trashy effects and some of the less successful gags. Nevertheless, a little more bite and cleverness would have been good for this fun comedy. Therefore: not quite a big hit, but entertaining and also somehow charming entertainment offer these vamps all the time! Picture + Sound: Technically, the Blu-Ray leaves a very good impression. The picture is very clean and the sharpness is on a very good level. Smaller details are also well recognizable in the many darker scenes. The powerful colors are especially well realized, giving this colorful vampire comedy its very special atmosphere. The sound is present in a good DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, which has some good surround moments to offer alongside the more directional mixed dialogue. Not really spectacular, but good! Extras: Apart from the trailer, there is unfortunately no bonus material. Conclusion:Vamps is an amusing vampire comedy, which, however, has nowhere near as much bite as one might have expected from director Amy Heckerling (Clueless). The two charming leading actresses and some very amusing ideas console then but over some flat gags and a surprisingly sensitively implemented subplot also raises the comedy to a level worth watching. Although the Blu-Ray has no additional material worth mentioning to offer, there is at the end despite some comedic missteps still a satisfied: worth seeing!
