Young writer Juliet Ashton (Lily James) has managed to bring some joy and lightheartedness back to people after World War II with her humorous stories about Izzy Bickerstaff. Although more Izzy stories would bring her even greater prosperity, Juliet now wants to write something more meaningful. When she receives a letter from farmer Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman) of the small Channel Island of Guernsey, she seems to have found the subject of her new book. In his letter, Dawsey tells of the Guernsey Friends of Poetry and Potato Peel Casserole book club that he and several other islanders formed out of necessity during the occupation. This literary club got them through hard times together, something the writer is eager to learn more about. Without further ado, she travels to the island, unaware that a story awaits her here that will change her life forever.

Mike Newell has once again directed a wonderful romance with Yours Juliet. The Four Weddings and a Funeral director has very successfully adapted Mary Ann Shaffer's bestselling novel for the cinema. He took many liberties with the book, but kept the core of the story and added some very nice aspects. Especially the relationship between Juliet and Dawsey is structured a bit differently in the film - but works especially well because of that. Between the enchanting Lily James (Cinderella, Downton Abbey) and Michiel Huisman (Forever Adeline, Game of Thrones) the sparks just fly, so that you as a viewer are immediately carried away by the tenderly developing love story.

The story of Elizabeth (Jessica Brown Findlay), one of the co-founders of the book club, told in flashbacks, brings a fair amount of drama to a production otherwise dominated by humorous levity. This story arc stirs up very different emotions, but they are no less powerful. Newell manages very well to concoct a coherent blend of the rather tragic story and the charming romance, leaving his audience with a happy smile at the end.

Your Juliet is simply a beautiful feel-good film that scores with a charming ensemble of actors, wonderful landscape shots and a story told with a lot of heart. Yes, some of it seems too contrived and there are also a few small lengths. But all in all, this visit to Guernsey is a wonderful break from everyday life, for which there is a clear Absolutely worth seeing!
