The Frankfurt Christmas Market was first mentioned in documents at the end of the 14th century, making it the oldest Christmas market in Germany after Bautzen. Over the last hundred years, the magnificently decorated market has also established itself as one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany. Every year, the colourful stalls around the Römerberg, the heart of the Frankfurt Christmas market, attract over two million visitors.
Against the backdrop of the Römer and St. Paul's Church, over 200 festively decorated stalls stretch from the Roßmarkt via Zeil, Römerberg and Paulsplatz down to the banks of the Main. The landmark is the 26-metre-high Christmas tree, decorated with around 25,000 lights and 600 bows. This year's tree sponsor is the Frankfurt Fire Brigade, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
In the hut directly under the Christmas tree, guests can not only obtain comprehensive information about Frankfurt and the Christmas market, but also find great Christmas gifts for Frankfurt fans. In addition, franked Christmas mail can finally be handed in there again to be stamped with the special Deutsche Post stamp.
At the WeihnachtsRoßmarkt , the urban high-rise backdrop combines with a cosy Christmas atmosphere in a special way: hot mulled wine from the 16-metre-high pyramid, a ride on the Ferris wheel at the foot of the skyscrapers and, new this year, a selfie in the sparkling carriage in front of the Gutenberg monument.
The diverse culinary offerings also include Frankfurt specialities such as Bethmännchen, hot apple wine and Handkäs' fondue. There is also an increasing range of vegetarian and vegan dishes on offer, for example at the Rosa Christmas Market.
