Giuseppe Verdi is without a doubt one of the most popular opera composers. The opera "Nabucco" is one of the most famous works of the Italian, along with "La Traviata", "Rigoletto", "Aida", "Falstaff" and "Othello". Especially the so-called "Prisoners' Chorus", which is still the highlight of every performance, advanced to the secret national anthem of Italy already during the composer's lifetime. On August 16, 2019, "Nabucco" will take place in a brilliant open-air production with the "Venezia Festival Opera" at the Amphitheater Hanau. The dramatic play about love and power will be uniquely staged with magnificent costumes, an imposing stage set and magical lighting as well as over one hundred performers. Renowned soloists, the great choir and the orchestra perform under the direction of the Bulgarian conductor Nayden Todorov. The staging is by the director Nadia Hristo. Hristo attaches great importance to traditional realisation and does this with great sensitivity and musical flair, which has been enthusiastically received by audiences in recent years. The press also raved about the production: "A real feast for the ears and eyes!" and "An enchanting production". Verdi wrote "Nabucco" when he was 28 years old. After living a lonely and melancholy life due to the death of his wife, the biblical words of the Nabucco libretto gave him new courage to face life and he completed the opera verse by verse. The premiere took place on 9 March 1842 at La Scala in Milan and met with extraordinary success. This triumph ushered in Verdi's years of success. To this day, the opera about the Jewish people's quest for freedom from Babylonian captivity has lost none of its popularity and ranks high on the hit list of most popular operas with its stirring crowd scenes, grandiose melodies and brilliant arias.
