It is not uncommon for successful motion pictures to be turned into musicals. But rarely does it succeed as well as it did with "Sister Act." The celebrated musical adaptation of the cult film can be seen at the English Theatre Frankfurt until April 2023. And you shouldn't miss it:

When nightclub singer Deloris van Cartier witnesses a murder, the police put her in a witness protection program - and in the one place where she's sure not to be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, Deloris finds it difficult to conform to the rigid daily routine of the convent, much less the strict guidance of the Mother Superior. Although she is not very enthusiastic about the new, unglamorous world, Deloris allows her showbiz experience to benefit the choir of nuns. With her own disco flair, dancing and singing talent, she breathes new life into the dusty convent, finding a sense of belonging and sisterhood that she has never experienced before.

Sister Act shines with powerful gospel music, dynamic choreography and plenty of 70s flair. According to director Ewan Jones, the plot offers room for staging a comedy with plenty of heart, soul and friendship as well as the potential for a gritty cop drama. This is beautifully portrayed in the antagonism between gangster Curtis and Police Officer Eddie.

The musical is based on the cult film of the same name starring Whoopi Goldberg and premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse in California in 2006 before moving to London in 2009. The play's music was penned by Alan Menken (including Little Shop of Horrors), with lyrics by Glenn Slater. The book was written by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, with assistance from Carter Beane.

Under the direction of director Ewan Jones, who is bringing a play to the ETF stage for the first time, Sister Act is a very American play meets the 14-member ensemble, whose performance and development of characters like Sister Mary Robert, Sister Mary Patrick and even Mother Superior is honestly touching. The result is an energetic and passionate show that constantly references the film with a wink. The action is underscored by hits like "Take Me To Heaven," "I Could Be That Guy" and "Sunday Morning Fever," performed by the five-piece live band under the musical direction of Mal Hall - familiar to ETF audiences from Cabaret and Sweeney Todd.
