The Museum of Modern Art (MMK), called "Tortenstück" by the people of Frankfurt because of its triangular shape, is Frankfurt's newest museum. It was opened in June 1991.
The Viennese architect Hans Hollein succeeded in structuring the building on the triangular site in such an intelligent way that a walk through the museum becomes a special experience.
The sequence of connections, transitions and vistas between the exhibition rooms, the relationship of the individual rooms to each other, as well as the optimal lighting are already extraordinary.
The spatial experience of the forty or so rooms, all of which are individually designed, is proven to delight the public.
However, the MMK is not only special architecturally, but the exhibits are also something to be proud of.
The focus of the permanent collection is on Pop Art, but elements of Object Art, Conceptualism and spatial installations are also on display.
In addition to the main building, there are two other dependencies. The MMK2 in the TaunusTurm is the newest location. Here, the most recent works from the collection as well as new productions are shown in rotation. MMK 3 is an exhibition space in the Zollamt, diagonally opposite the main building. New positions in contemporary art, collaborations and events are presented here.
