4 is an independent cinema documentary about one of the world's most outstanding string quartets - Quatuor Ebène. Little by little, 4 takes the viewer into the ambivalent interplay of the four musicians' relationship during their tour of Italy. Bolzano, Perugia, Florence and Siena, as well as Salzburg and Berlin, are the stage for a character piece set against a backdrop of ambition and reality. The focus is not on the stage performances of the multi-award-winning French string quartet, but on what happens backstage, which is mostly hidden from the audience: the musicians' struggle with the notes, their colleagues - and with themselves.
The musicians of Quatuor Ebène allowed a spectacularly close-up view of themselves in every situation, not presenting their self-images to the camera, but embracing the opportunity to rediscover themselves through film work. This was only possible because of the great friendly trust that developed between the musicians and the film team over the course of several years. This trust was the basis of the joint work.
So with 4 we have obtained a unique testimony of the musicians' contradictory longings, sufferings and joys, but also a relationship story, equally rich in exquisite intuition and strange misunderstandings that give us food for thought.
