Cine Brasil - 13th Brazilian Film Festival with eight films

At the end of March, there is once again the unique chance in the cinema year to get to know new Brazilian cinema at Filmforum Höchst. Because although Brazil is one of the biggest and most important film countries in Latin America, unfortunately not a single Brazilian film started in German cinemas in 2017.

The selected films have won prizes at festivals in Brazil, but also in some cases worldwide.

With the films Redemoinho - Wirbelwind based on the original "O Mundo Inimigo - Inferno Provisório II" by Luis Ruffato and A hora e vez de Augusto Matraga - The Hour of Augusto Matraga based on a novella by João Guimarães Rosa are film adaptations of the works of two famous Brazilian authors in the program.

Involved family stories are told in the films As duas Irenes - The Two Irenes in which two previously unknown half-sisters meet and Gloria e Graça, in which a successful transwoman finds herself forced to take responsibility for her sick sister's children. Set in the wild and free 1960s just before the 1964 military coup, Domingos Oliveira's film BR - 716 is set in the circles of Bohème.

Three documentaries round out the program: Curumim, which documents everyday prison life through the eyes of an inmate; Menino 23, which deals with Brazilian Nazi ideology and the enslavement of fifty black children in the 1930s; and Pitanga, which documents the life and work of Afro-Brazilian actor Antônio Pitanga, who worked with famous directors.
