Classics & Rarities in the Cinema of the German Film Museum

Digitizing the National Film Heritage
Film Series from Wednesday, 01, to Tuesday, 28. March

Numerous classics of German film have been digitized in high resolution in recent years thanks to the support of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, including from the Deutsches Filminstitut. In March, the Deutsches Filmmuseum's cinema will present four important German films that are now available as digital distribution copies.

Wednesday, 01 March, 18:00. With introduction: Thomas Worschech
THE GRAVER
Germany/Great Britain 1930. dir: Richard Eichberg
d: Hans Albers, Charlotte Susa, Margot Walter. 87 min. DCP
Scotland Yard hunts Knife Jack, who strikes fear into London. The title role is played by Hans Albers, who initially only played dubious characters in supporting roles in the silent era. It wasn't until the talkies that he advanced to hero actor, of which DER GREIFER is an early example. In the 1920s/1930s, director Richard Eichberg was a central figure in German genre cinema. His melodramas and adventure films had international appeal.

Saturday, March 11, 6:00 pm, Tuesday, March 14. March, 6:00 p.m.
BEKENNTNISSE DES HOCHSTAPLERS FELIX KRULL
BRD 1957. dir: Kurt Hoffmann
d: Horst Buchholz, Liselotte Pulver, Ingrid Andree. 107 mins DCP
Kurt Hoffmann filmed Thomas Mann's novel in 1957, which depicts the career of an ambitious good-for-nothing. Spirit, wit, charm and irony are in every scene. A large part of this was due to the collaboration of Erika Mann on the screenplay, who continued to write the unfinished picaresque novel to a conclusion and can even be seen in a supporting role. Hoffmann cast Horst Buchholz, whose international career began with this film, in the title role.

Saturday, March 18. March, 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 6 p.m.
THE HOUSE IN MONTEVIDEO
BRD 1963. dir: Helmut Käutner
d: Heinz Rühmann, Ruth Leuwerik, Paul Dahlke. 123 min. DCP
DAS HAUS IN MONTEVIDEO is Helmut Käutner's lavish remake of the 1951 Curt Goetz comedy, in which a virtuous father of twelve is beset by moral conflicts as a result of the will of his sister, who was disowned for a misstep. Käutner directed one of the most influential film directors of German cinema. Ruth Leuwerik, who died in early 2016, is seen here in one of her last cinema roles before retiring from the screen and appearing only occasionally in television productions.

Tuesday, March 28, 6:00 p.m.

DANTON
Germany 1931. dir. Hans Behrendt
d: Fritz Kortner, Gustaf Gründgens, G. von Wangenheim. 86 min. DCP
During the French Revolution, a dispute erupts over what should be done with the ousted King Louis XVI. The radical forces around Danton prevail. After the execution of the king, there is a wave of arrests and mass executions. When Danton falls in love with the noblewoman Louise Gély during a prison inspection, he makes himself vulnerable to his opponent Robespierre. Hans Behrendt's DANTON, from the early days of talkies, features a top-notch cast including Fritz Kortner and Gustaf Gründgens.
