Festival CUBA IM FILM from 11 to 20 May at Filmforum Höchst

For the 22nd time, the Festival Cuba im Film will take place this year from 11 - 20. May, the Cuba in Film Festival will take place at Filmforum Höchst in Frankfurt, the only one of its kind in Europe.

In cooperation with the 3rd World House, twelve feature films, documentaries and eleven short films will be presented. As part of the festival, the Young Cuban Film Short Film Award will be presented on May 17 to Yimit Ramírez for his film METAPERROS.

Other guests expected this year are Luis Alberto Garcia, "the face of Cuban cinema", who is represented in three films, director Lester Hamlet (YA NO ES ANTES) and young director Patricia Ramos (EL TECHO).

With the exception of the new film by Fernando Perez, which premiered at the Berlinale, all films are German- in some cases European premieres.

With this year's focus on "Cuba from the Outside", the festival looks back with films that show how great the interest of European and American intellectuals and filmmakers was in the transformation of Cuban society during the first years of the revolution.

As always, hips will be shaking to live music. At a salsa party with the group Tumbao Cubano.

The guests as well as some films will also be shown in Hamburg (Kino 3001), Berlin (Babylon), Saarbrücken (Kino 8 ½) and in Weiterstadt (Koki) as part of a tour of the festival.

New Productions

Migration and return, cultural differences between those who have left and those who have stayed at home: this is the background foil for Lester Hamlet's YA NO ES ANTES, which will open the festival. In Havana, it won the Audience Award at the Festival of New Latin American Cinema, and lead actor Luis Alberto García also received the award for Best Male Lead.

Luis Alberto García can also be seen in Jessica Rodriguez' episodic film ESPEJUELOS OSCUROS as well as in VIENTOS EN LA HABANA, a large-scale Spanish-Cuban production by Felix Viscarret based on the book Vientos de Cuaresma - engl. title Handel der Gefühle (Trade of Emotions) from the Havana Quartet series by the successful Cuban author Leonardo Padura.

Patricia Ramos's EL TECHO is an enjoyable presentation of representatives of a young generation trying to get to grips with the new opportunities for small independents. Her first feature length film was very well received by audiences in Havana.

Cuban filmmaker Fernando Pérez, who is most internationally known, is unfortunately prevented by filming commitments from again personally presenting his latest film ÚLTIMOS DÍAS EN LA HABANA at the Film Forum. After its premiere at the Berlinale, the film will now be presented at the Cuba Festival.

The music films PLAYING LECUONA by Pavel Giroud and Juanma Villar Betancourt about Ernesto Lecuona, the overfather of Cuban music and CUBAJAZZ by the Brazilian Max Alvim about the young generation of jazz musicians in Cuba, are a clear must-see not only for music lovers.

Festival Focus "Cuba from Outside" Five films from 1963 to 2003

This year's focus "Cuba from Outside" looks back once again with films that show how great the interest of European and American intellectuals and filmmakers was in the transformation of Cuban society in the first years of the revolution.

For example, in the early 1960s, travelers included. Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Duras, actor Gérard Philipe, filmmakers Armand Gatti, Joris Ivens, Jean - Luc Godard, Chris Marker and Agnès Varda to Cuba. In her 1963 documentary SALUT LES CUBAINS, based on her photographs, Varda told in fascinating images of the everyday life of Cubans, of a vibrant Havana, of the buoyant physicality, the sugar cane harvest and, with a slightly ironic undertone, of Fidel Castro's speeches. The positive aspects of the Cuban Revolution were also emphasized by Danish director Theodor Christensen in his 1964 film ELLA, which focused on various aspects of the situation of women in Cuba, including their involvement in the militias. Christensen worked closely with Cuban filmmakers such as Sara Gómez during this period.
