The new series "Frankfurt Previews" will show films in which the city of Frankfurt am Main plays a role. This series is intended to strengthen Frankfurt as a film location and underline Frankfurt's image as a modern, international, cosmopolitan city. The premiere of TOKAT - DAS LEBEN SCHLÄGT ZURÜCK marks the start of the series. Not only does the film's subject matter have a strong connection to the city of Frankfurt, the Main metropolis is also the directors' center of life and the headquarters of JIP Film & Distribution.
About the film:
Kerem, Dönmez and Hakan belonged to notorious youth gangs like Turkish Powerboys, Lamina or Club 77 in Frankfurt during their youth in the 90s. Drug dealing, acquisitive crime, beatings - their reputation spread rapidly, not least through reporting in local and national media. Dönmez: "We spent 10,000 DM in one night, that was nothing - nobody thought about tomorrow".
Since then, more than 20 years have passed and Kerem, Dönmez and Hakan have grown up. There are few parallels left in their lives: Kerem's health is ruined due to his drug use at the time. He is an early pensioner. Dönmez has been deported to Turkey, is a family man and has found a good job. Hakan was deported to Turkey, works as a field labourer at the foot of Mount Ararat and no longer has citizenship. This also leaves him unable to act in Turkey.
Tokat - Life Strikes Back is a multi-layered film in which the ambivalence to the "underworld" - rejection and fascination - works. It is touching to get to know the men, some of whom are still heavily scarred by their youth. Tokat is more than a film about lost youth in gangs - it shows, without any social dreaming, how it can end. Tokat literally means "slap in the face."
