Women are the focus of the French films SAGE FEMME - EIN KUSS VON BEATRICE by Martin Provost and VICTORIA - MÄNNER UND AND OTHER MISSGESCHICKE by Justine Triet.
In SAGE FEMME, a midwife (Catherine Frot) whose practice is about to close receives a call from her late father's extroverted ex-lover (Catherine Deneuve): she is very sceptical about a meeting, but then agrees. This reunion of two headstrong women is superbly cast with two grandes dames of French cinema and spreads a comedic drama about the need for change on the screen.
Parisian criminal lawyer VICTORIA (Virginie Efira) balances her job, two children and numerous affairs and friendships not confidently but naturally. She lives a multi-faceted life without having everything under control at all times, so absurdly funny situations often arise.
Both films premiered at major festivals this year. Provost's film started in competition at the Berlinale (out of competition), Triet's film opened the "Semaine de la Critique" in Cannes.
6.7. - 12.7. French pool films
The cinema says goodbye to the summer holidays with a very French "pool programme" with three of the many films set against this backdrop:
In Solveig Anspach's L´EFFET AQUATIQUE - DER EFFEKT DES WASSERS the good swimmer Samir falls in love with the swimming teacher Agathe and tries to get closer to the beloved via swimming lessons. A romantic comedy with wonderful and tender moments, which lets reality and fiction melt into each other like water. Since its premiere in Cannes, the film has won various awards.
Francois Ozon's famous film SWIMMING POOL is set in a beautiful country house in the south of France to which a crime writer (Charlotte Rampling) has retreated. But then the young daughter of her publisher (Ludivine Sagnier) shows up and more or less upsets Sarah. In a confusion between fantasy and reality, Francois Ozon's erotic thriller developed a tension-laden atmosphere of a hot summer by the pool with a surprising ending.
Lue summer nights, the tingling coolness of a swimming pool - in such stirring atmosphere develops in LA NAISSANCE DES PIEUVRES - WATERLILIES a dense drama about friendship and awakening sexuality. Synchronized swimming, with the graceful body control it requires, has captivated 15-year-old Marie - or rather, the beautiful Floriane, star of the swimming group. The debut film Céline Sciammas, with which she had an immediate international breakthrough, is full of emotionality and follows the trials and tribulations of growing up in its deepest passion.
On 7/13 Filmforum Höchst says goodbye to the summer break and opens its doors again on 8/24/2017.
