Film:
In the small town of Högsboträsk, crime only takes place in the mind of police officer Benny (Torkel Petersson). In his daydreams, the action fan fights evil bank robbers and finishes them off in the best ,,Matrix" manner. But the reality is quite different. The highlight of the day is the capture of a cow, which was probably too bored in its pasture. But real crooks never come to Högsboträsk. The head office has also heard about this and wants to close the office in Högsboträsk in order to make drastic cuts. To this end, the pretty Jessica is sent to the small town to write a report about the need for police presence in Högsboträsk.
Police officer Jacob (Fares Fares), who immediately has his eye on Jessica, and his colleagues then decide to help the statistics a little. And so it just so happens that during Jessica's visit, the local grocery store is robbed, a sausage stand goes up in flames, and in the woods the police engage in a wild shootout with suspected felons. But, of course, Jessica is not so easily fooled and, despite the incidents, she is ready to recommend that the department be closed. But shortly before she leaves, a hostage situation occurs that actually seems to be real.
Following his surprise international success ,,Jalla Jalla!", Swede Josef Fares presents his latest comedy, ,,Kops", which is one of the biggest box-office successes ever in Sweden. The beginning of the film is a bit scary at first, as you get the feeling that you are watching a rather mediocre parody a la ,,The Naked Gun". Yet the introductory scene is merely a dream sequence of action movie fanatic Benny, who would like to see his life in the style of ,,Die langsam". But it is these elaborately staged dream sequences that are among the least funny parts of what is otherwise a genuinely amusing film. Indeed, most of the humor in ,,Kops" is rather quiet and offbeat. Only a few times Josef Fares reaches a little too deep into the mainstream box, which does not really harm the film.
It is, however, the charm of the characters and their almost naive life in the small village that makes ,,Kops" a really successful comedy. Amiably quirky small town characters seem to work well in comedies anyway. Just think of ,,Local Hero" or the cult series ,,Alaska of all places". Fares manages to make the audience grow fond of his characters in no time, even if he hardly leaves out a cinematic cliché. But the few weaknesses of the script are made up for by the charming production.
Absurd dream sequences, witty dialogues, a charming story and lovable characters, these are the ingredients that make ,,Kops" an above-average comedy with some weaknesses. And even if the mixture of subtle humour and crude jokes sometimes just doesn't want to go together, a visit to the Swedish province is definitely worthwhile for all viewers who want to have a good time again. Because ,,Kops" is funnier than the trailer suggests. Therefore: Definitely worth seeing!
