Open-air cinema in the Städel Garden shows heroes of history
Once again this year, open-air cinema fans can look forward to the popular summer cinema in the Städel Garden. From 13 to 16 July, the green roof of the Städel extension will provide the unique open-air backdrop for a selected and varied film programme. In keeping with the parallel special exhibition "Georg Baselitz. The Heroes" (30 June to 23 October 2016), the fourth edition of the summer cinema is dedicated to films that tell stories of extraordinary heroes. With free admission, the documentary "Georg Baselitz" (2013) by Evelyn Schels, Giulio Ricciarelli's "In the Labyrinth of Silence" (2014) and "Searching for Sugar Man" (2012) by director Malik Bendjelloul will be screened after dark on the first three evenings. On Saturday, July 16, there will also be a screening for young viewers in the Metzler Hall: The film "Rico, Oskar und die Tieferschatten" (2014) will be shown there already in the afternoon at 3:00 pm. On the last evening, 16 July, the audience can once again decide for themselves which film will be shown. The choices are Sönke Wortmann's "Das Wunder von Bern" (2003), Carol Reed's classic "Der dritte Mann" (1949) and "Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer" (2015) by Lars Kraume. Votes can be cast from 27 June to 11 July inclusive via ballot paper on site at the Städel Museum or at Http://facebook.com/staedelmuseum.de
Admission to the Summer Cinema in the Städel Garden is free on all days. Admission is from 7pm on each of the evenings, with the film starting at dusk each night. Please bring your own blankets and seating (no chairs). Cold drinks as well as savoury and sweet food will be provided before and during the film screenings. DJ Biffy (Discocaine) will create a relaxed summer atmosphere even before the film starts. In case of bad weather, the screenings will take place in the Metzler Hall of the Städel Museum.
The summer cinema is part of an initiative with which the Städel Museum is opening up its freely accessible garden space for changing installations, performances and events on contemporary art. In the course of the new presentation of the sculpture collection in the Städel Garden in 2013 and the series "In the Städel Garden", the Städel's outdoor space has in the recent past repeatedly become the location for performative and installative works, for example by Adrian Williams ("Watering Hole", 2013), Adolf Luther ("Architecture as Light and Reflection", 2013), Erwin Wurm ("One Minute Sculptures", 2014) or Franz Erhard Walther ("Screaming Pedestals and Stands", 2014). This year, Belgian artist David Claerbout will present a new work in the Städel Garden from 28 September to 6 November 2016.
