Info: "U2 3D", the first digital 3D film with live concert footage, will finally be launched in cinemas in Germany and Austria from 13 March 2008. The 3D spectacle will be shown in selected IMAX™ cinemas as well as in digital cinemas and Cinemagnum cinemas nationwide. "U2 3D" is a unique and novel cinematic experience that puts viewers right in the middle of an energetic stadium concert by the world's most popular band, giving a true live feel. The production combines innovative digital 3D footage and 5.1 surround sound with the mesmerizing experience of a U2 concert - recorded in South America during the "Vertigo" tour - to create an unprecedented form of concert footage. Thanks to the elaborate technology used in the production, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen are within reach of their fans. "U2 3D" is not only a stirring collage of live footage, but also explores the possibilities of digital 3D and surround sound technology to create an almost supernatural proximity to the musicians. Viewers can be fully immersed in U2's brilliant soundscapes or ride a wave of outstretched arms over the heads of the audience - always being in the middle of the action rather than watching it from the outside. The sense of closeness to the audience is almost eerie, as if Bono has stepped off the screen to spend a moment with us. Directed by Catherine Owens, who has been the picture director for U2 for 15 years now, and Mark Pellington, director of the U2 video "One". Never before has such an amount of 3D camera technology been used for a single production. The production team followed U2's 2006 "Vertigo" tour of South America, capturing thrilling stadium concerts in cities in four different countries - including Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Santiago de Chile and Buenos Aires. In total, more than 100 hours of footage were recorded for the project, capturing many of U2's biggest hits. These include seminal U2 songs such as "Pride (In the Name of Love)", "New Years Day", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Miss Sarajevo", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "With or Without You", "Bullet the Blue Sky", "The Fly" and "One". But also newer tracks like "Beautiful Day", "Love and Peace or Else", "Vertigo", "Sometimes You Cant Make It On Your Own" and "Yahweh." Produced by John and Peter Shapiro, both of 3ality Digital, "U2 3D" was produced by John Modell, Steve Schklair and Marc Owens. Sandy Climan and Michael Peyser of 3ality Digital and David Modell served as executive producers. (Text: Fantasia Film) Review: U2 are one of the most popular and successful live bands around for a reason. Their show is spectacular in a very simple sense. The music and the charisma of the band members, first and foremost of course frontman Bono, is enough to get the crowd excited. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of attending a U2 concert or would like to relive this very special experience, this 3D concert film is an absolute must. Not only are all the big hits presented in rousing live versions during the almost 90 minutes, the 3D effect also gives the viewer the feeling of being right on the stage or in the audience. Every little detail, whether water bottles or notes on the stage are recognizable, the microphone seems to be within reach, and it's almost as if Bono would walk right up to you. All well and good, but something is still missing for the real live effect: the fans! If you watch the movie with a very "normal" audience, which is quietly glued in their seats and maybe humming silently to themselves, then even the best 3D effect is of little use. Only if the audience in the cinema also fully absorbs the live atmosphere, sings along, claps along, then it is also possible to forget for a short time that you are sitting in a cinema and wearing silly glasses that not even Bono would voluntarily put on (and the gentleman has already worn some strange glasses on his nose!) So or so: of course the 3D film is no real substitute for the true concert experience. But it definitely comes closer to the experience than any live CD or DVD. For U2 fans and all who want to become one, going to the Cinemagnum is an absolute must!
