Movie: They are young, do their thing and are just happy doing it: the friendly couples Stella (Vicky Krieps) and Markus (Marcel Mohab), Ines (Pia Hierzegger) and Chris (Manuel Rubey), as well as Migno (Pheline Roggan) and Luis (Andreas Kiendl) don't want to be bent by anything or anyone - not even by the offspring that has announced itself to all three couples. But as soon as the children are born, reality catches up with the friends. And each couple has to learn in their own way how to deal with the fact that the relaxed hipster life is over. And between diaper changes, nutritionists and playground visits, it will become clear whether their relationships are strong enough to survive the change from I to Us.

Oh yeah, didn't we all think we weren't going to be like those other parents? That we will do everything differently and better with our children? That we'll manage, that the little rascals won't turn our whole lives completely upside down? With the comedy Was hat uns bloß so ruiniert director Marie Kreutzer has exactly this attitude perfectly collide with reality and shows in an entertaining way how differently parents deal with the realization that they are just like everyone else and are faced with exactly the same everyday problems.

If you have ever closely observed the behavior of other parents on a playground and can also look at yourself with a little self-irony, you will rediscover something from your own everyday life as a parent in almost every second here. With very dry wordplay and really well observed situation comedy, especially the first hour of this big city comedy provides a lot of good humor. The ensemble of actors, with their easy-going, authentic acting, also ensures that the whole thing works so well. Even if quite a few clichés are used here, the whole thing somehow seems believable and natural - and that clearly increases the pleasure for the viewer.

In the last half hour, however, it gets a little too thick when all the built-up conflicts escalate. While this is still quite enjoyable, it loses a bit of the real-life feel that the first two-thirds of the film excelled at. But at the end of the day this is just complaining on a high level. For What Just Ruined Us is, with all its strengths and weaknesses, an all-round amusing, wonderfully cheeky and simply beautiful film that speaks from the heart of many young parents - or mercilessly holds up a mirror to them. But even those who have no offspring and simply like good German-language comedies should not miss this work. Absolutely worth seeing!

Picture + Sound: The image of the DVD pleases with powerful colors and a decent image sharpness, which often reproduces even smaller details well. The audio is rather unspectacular due to the genre. However, the dialogue and soundtrack ring out powerfully from the home theater speakers. Good.

Extras: As a bonus, the DVD has some cut scenes (approx. 16:02 min.), a few outtakes (approx. 9:35 min.), as well as a making of (approx. 17:28 min.) to offer. Thereby the viewer gets to see interviews, footage from the rehearsals and the shooting. Good.

Conclusion: What Just Ruined Us is a very amusing, well-observed comedy about the pitfalls of being a parent. A good ensemble cast, sparkling dialogue and wry real-life humor make this film absolutely worth watching. The DVD convinces with a good picture and sound quality, as well as some decent extras. The bottom line is a clear: Absolutely recommendable!
