Sergei Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances op. 45
Peter Eötvös "Shadows" for flute, clarinet and orchestra
Joseph Haydn Symphony in G major no. 100 "Military Symphony" Is it a retrospective of his musical output? In the summer of 1940, on Long Island, Rachmaninoff wrote three "fantastic" dances, as he originally called them, for large orchestra. These "Symphonic Dances" are both dance-like and mysterious. This music begs the question of whether Rachmaninoff was really the "last Romantic." And where does the tradition of Bartok and Kodaly live on? Peter Eötvös - one of the last students of Zoltan Kodaly - began his composition studies at the age of 14. Today, the 2018 Artist in Residence at the Elbphilarmonie has long been one of the world's most important composers and conductors.
