George Antheil Violin Sonata No. 1
Deepen, internalize - and consciously listen: The "2 x hören" series at the Alte Oper Frankfurt aims to provide new approaches to music by directing the ear to the special features of a work. For example, the first violin sonata by the U.S. composer and pianist George Antheils, which is the focus of the upcoming edition of "2 x hören". On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, accompanied on the piano by Joonas Ahonen, will introduce the audience to this idiosyncratic work by an idiosyncratic composer in the Mozart Saal of the Alte Oper from 8:00 pm.
The internationally acclaimed violinist describes the composer, who was born in 1900, as a "shining comet that struck the depression of interwar Europe." Antheil liked to call himself the "Bad Boy of Music." And he underscored his reputation as an eccentric by, for example, once pulling out a pistol at a concert in Budapest to ensure silence in the hall. In his first violin sonata, composed in 1923, Antheil also cares little for norms, but plays with the unexpected - irregular impulses, rows of rests, two slow movements in a row, innovative playing techniques on the violin and much more.
According to the title of the series, the corresponding work will be heard twice: first without commentary, then the attention will be focused in the workshop discussion between the violinist, the pianist and moderator Dr. Markus Fein, the moderator of the workshop, will then focus on passages that catch the listener's attention, on subtleties and boldness, on compositional tricks and strokes of genius - or even on personal favorite passages or hurdles from the point of view of the interpreters. On the basis of this background knowledge, the music can be experienced and appreciated in a completely new way on a second hearing. With this format, the Alte Oper also addresses classical music novices who would like to be introduced to music.
