50 years have passed since a science fiction film was released, electrifying cineastes and making György Ligeti's "Atmosphères" world-famous in one fell swoop: "2001: A Space Odyssey" was the name Stanley Kubrick gave to his gigantic film epic, the subject of which was nothing less than a utopian anthropology. In breathtakingly novel, mystical and disturbing images, he captured his visions of humanity's rise to consciousness and its decline in a high-tech cosmos. With his "A Space Odyssey" Kubrick delivered a completely new kind of storytelling on the screen and also wrote film history in terms of production technology and aesthetics. Of crucial importance was to be Kubrick's choice of score, which he found in the bold works of Ligeti. As if one emerges from the other, so symbiotic is the unity between sounds and images. Film and music become an overwhelming experience when the hr-Sinfonieorchester brings the original soundtrack to the screening of Kubrick's masterpiece live onto the stage of the Alte Oper. The film screening with live music is also a worthy conclusion to the 50th anniversary celebrations of "A Space Odyssey", on the occasion of which the world's only special exhibition on "Kubrick's 2001" will be on display at the Deutsches Filmmuseum from 21 March to 23 September 2018.
In addition to conductor Frank Strobel, guest at Talk at the Bar is Jan Harlan, who worked on Stanley Kubrick's films as executive producer from 1971 until his death. A close collaborator for many years, film biographer, Kubrick's brother-in-law and executor of his estate, he provides insight into the work and personality of the eminent director.
