Paul Hindemith Suite 1922 op. 26
Deepen, internalize - and listen anew: The series "2 x hören" of the Alte Oper Frankfurt aims to direct the ear to special features of a work and thus enable new approaches to music. Also in the 2022/23 season, four dates of this series, which was established last season, are scheduled, each focusing on a chamber music composition. In accordance with the title, the corresponding work will be performed twice: first without commentary, then in a workshop discussion between the performers and moderator Markus Fein, the focus will be on passages that catch the listener's attention, on subtleties and audacities, on compositional tricks and strokes of genius - or also on personal favorite passages or hurdles from the performers' point of view. On the basis of this background knowledge, the music can be experienced and appreciated in a completely new way on a second hearing. With this format, the Alte Oper also addresses classical music novices who would like to be introduced to music.
The first edition of the "2 x hören" series of the 2022/23 season - on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 8 p.m. in the Mozart Saal of the Alte Oper - takes us to Frankfurt in the 1920s. For it was here in the city exactly 100 years ago that 26-year-old Paul Hindemith composed his 1922 Suite for piano. For the then conductor of the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, this productive year of 1922 meant his final breakthrough as a composer. Pierre-
Laurent Aimard, in his own right a dedicated mediator of music, especially of the 20th century, interprets this suite, in which Hindemith skillfully interwove elements of the light music of his time. And in conversation with moderator and Alte Oper artistic director Markus Fein, he explains what Hindemith's specific playing instructions, such as the one for the suite's last movement, a ragtime, are all about: "Play this piece very wildly, but keep it in strict rhythm, like a machine."
