As a retirement work, Henri Dutilleux wrote his five-part cycle for large orchestra, "The Shadows of Time.“. In it, three children's voices ask the question "Why us?". The work, however, is not just reverent commemoration, but a remembrance of life itself: Our existence is full of haunted creatures ("The Ominous Ariel"), rich in color ("Waves of Light") and relentlessly subject to the beat of time ("The Hours"). Poulenc's Concerto for Two Pianos, on the other hand, is a high-energy game of musical wit and a tribute to Mozart.
